The role of Nedda in Leoncavallo's verismo classic never entered Callas's stage repertoire, and so her recording made with the forces of La Scala, Milan, between 12 and 17 June 1954 represents one of her explorations of an opera made purely within the confines of the studio, rather than developing over a period on the stage. But as in all such cases - this was the first time she recorded a role she had not previously sung - Callas's desire to explore it to the fullest remains paramount. There is a complete identification between singer and character, down to the smallest detail, that make her Nedda an unusually complex creation that grows throughout the opera as she responds to its desperate emotional thrills and spills.

This CD has two of the best arias every Callas fan should have….the bell song and la mamma morta these arias alone make this cd worth it….she shows her true power and agility in both of these arias that display what is called perfect technique….making her a true Dramatic Colortura singer…and maybe the only real one…but this cd has more it contains an aria from her famous role of Nedda from Pagliacci which she never did on stage so this is a real treat… and her Carmen is always perfectly done…this cd runs through so many beautiful arias and Callas did great in all of them…this is why we call her La Divina

Heavy Latin funk and soul! This excellent set follows in the same vein as Harmless' other Latin sets – dipping into obscurities of the late 60s and early 70s to come up with a cool batch of cuts that sound totally fresh today. And even though some of these tracks have already been reissued on the full CDs by the artists, the general groove of the set makes the tracks really great together – especially since some of the best cuts are from albums that are otherwise not that great. Titles include "Para Los Rumberos" by Tito Puente, "Psychedelic Blues" by Willie Bobo, "Control" by Ismael Quinones, "Freak Off" by Orchestra Harlow, "Black & Blues" by The Latin Soul Drives, "Spanish Grease" by El Chicano, "Combolu" by El Gran Combo, "Es Tu Cosa" by Joe Bataan, "Que Se Sepa" by Roberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound, and "Fun City Shingaling" by Joe Quijano & His Conjunto Cachana.

Known for her idiosyncratic performances of baroque repertoire and eccentric personal style, the German coloratura soprano Simone Kermes trained in her native Leipzig, with early successes including the International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition. Bach has not, however, figured prominently in her career since then – Kermes gravitated towards Vivaldi, Handel and the Neapolitan composers who wrote for the great castrati, such as Riccardo Broschi, Alessandro Scarlatti and Porpora. (She has recorded several solo albums of such repertoire for Sony, including Dramma, and Colori d’Amore – reviewing the latter, BBC Music Magazine described her as ‘a remarkable artist, charming, fascinating and boldly risk-taking by turns’).

"…It would be hard to imagine a more compelling case for this material than that made by Jaroussky and Emmanuelle Haïm, who plays harpsichord and conducts Concerto Köln. They invest this music with such life and devote such exquisite attention to its nuances that the album fully deserves the attention of fans of the Baroque or Vivaldi, or of anyone who simply cherishes hearing terrifically talented and spirited performers giving their all to music they clearly love. The album is beautifully produced and has clean, vibrant, and natural sound, with excellent balance." ~allmusicguide

Total bomb from the Big Three - Cal, Charlie, Tito. A really hard-hitting set from Cal Tjader and one that's done with a good dose of 60s Latin Soul as well! The album was recorded in the early 70s, but it's really got a late 60s New York flavor thanks to arrangers Charlie Palmieri and Tito Puente who cook up a groove that's sockingly soulful, and much more outta site than some of Tjader's other work from the time!
