Throughout the oceans, orcas are supreme hunters, disposing of their prey with strength and cunning. However, even among these predators, one pod stands out for the daring lengths to which it will go for a meal. For years the orcas of Peninsula Valdez have run the remarkable risk of beaching themselves in order to catch sea lion pups, but now they are also targeting massive elephant seal pups. Can they perfect the dangerous technique, or have these killer whales taken on more than they can handle?

When a movie theater usher is fired, he takes up with criminals and finds himself quite adept at various illegal activities. The BBC version of Life arrives with an at-times breathtaking, altogether stunning 1080p/VC-1 transfer; one that boasts gorgeous colors and remarkable detail, and puts most other nature documentary presentations to shame. Still, comparisons to the series' 1080i Discovery Channel release are the most inevitable and the most unavoidable. Simply put, the differences between the two aren't earth shattering – in some instances, our beloved little "p" may as well stand for "placebo" – but they are notable. There are plenty of scenes and shots in which the tiniest strands of animal hair are crisper, distant foliage is more refined, and the craggly crevices of rocky ravines are more revealing.

The prolific Brillante Mendoza, one of the few internationally acknowledged auteurs in this year's Tribeca, follows up Kinatay, the gang-rape-and-dismemberment outrage from last year's Cannes, with a gentle ode to two resilient Manila family elders linked by a crime. The title is Tagalog for "grandmother": Sepa (Anita Linda) tries to raise money for the funeral of her grandson, killed during a cell-phone theft; the murderer's granny, Puring (Rustica Carpio), dutifully brings mango and rice cakes to the boy in jail while mollifying Sepa's anger with pesos tied up in a dirty hankie. Though arthritic and weary, these two gray panthers offer a sharp, unsentimental portrait of cunning and determination.
