We always love getting to check out new music, especially when an artist presents themselves as Ashley Wilson does. Wilson is billed as an artist who is reminiscent of Norah Jones, and that was enough to peak our interest. So how does her debut Paint The Sky– which arrives March 1st hold up? The album opens with “Once In A While,” and stylistically it’s immediately clear why Wilson garnered comparisons to Jones. There’s a definite jazz sound to the song that fans of Jones will immediately find themselves bopping their heads along to. Wilson’s voice- while a bit less husky than Jones’s- is clearly pretty from the opening number. We also enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek lyrics, especially when Wilson sang, “We’ll have this back and forth duel, where sometimes the bed is hot then cool.”

AT THE GATES are innovators. From debut album, The Red In The Sky Is Ours, through comeback stunner, At War With Reality, the Gothenburg-based death metal act have always traversed the left-hand path on their own terms. The Swedes are keenly aware of who they are, where they come from, and how they got to where they are today. In the ‘90s, AT THE GATES spearheaded The New Wave of Swedish Death Metal. In the aughts, then-swansong album, Slaughter Of The Soul, served as a feature-rich treasure chest for a host of upstarts to plunder. When AT THE GATES returned in 2008—a full 12 years after they disbanded—their return was celebrated and the follow-up to Slaughter Of The Soul—now placing handsomely on Top Metal Album Lists—hotly anticipated. Now, four years after At War with Reality, the Swedes are ready to show their indomitable spirit, ceaseless ingenuity, and raw power on new album, To Drink From The Night Itself.

Live on WBAB is the first live concert album by American rock band Crack the Sky. The album was released by Lifesong Records (catalog #LS-100) in 1976, but only to radio stations for promotional purposes. It came in a plain white sleeve with only a sticker identifying the record, and photocopied inserts about the band. In 1988, Lifesong released Live on WBAB on CD (catalog #LSCD 8802). It includes four additional tracks, taken from the 1978 LP Live Sky.

This is a very good live album from Crack The Sky, with a bunch of songs I had been waiting a long time to hear played with John Palumbo in the band. There is a fair amount of prog here. "From The Greenhouse", "Nuclear Apathy", "Why Me", "The Art Of Wondering", "Ice", "A Sea Epic", "Mind Baby" and a cover of "I Am The Walrus" all fall squarely in that category, while many other songs have some prog elements, especially in the istrumental sections.
