Wilhelm Kempff Il s’inscrit dans la liste de ces artistes du 20ème siècle pour lesquels la musique avait une dimension sacrée, voire philosophique et spirituelle. This music, originally issued in Italy as Chet Sextet & Quartet and in the USA as Chet Baker in Milan, was recorded by the great trumpeter/vocalist backed by a small group of Italian players in Milan, Italy, in 1959. A complete session - also recorded in Italy - presenting Baker mostly on vocals with an orchestra conducted by Ennio Morricone (celebrated for his soundtracks to the films of Sergio Leone), and two tracks recorded in Baden Baden, Germany, have been added as a bonus.

Born in 1936, Naosuke Miyamoto was already a veteran bassist when he made this debut album as a leader. In 1960 he had joined George Kawaguchi's Big Four Plus One band and played with Sadao Watanabe. For this first album he had waited more than 15 years to make, he assembled established musicians about his age and younger musicians with fresh sensibilities. The fiery playing style of the band reflects their influences from the post-bop movements by progressive artists such as John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter.

Pianist/composer/arranger/bandleader David Berkman is a well-known recording artist on the New York scene as a leader, a sideman for many big names (Sonny Stitt, Tom Farrell, Cecil McBee) and as a teacher at Universities and Jazz Camps in the U.S, South America, Asia and Europe. Here, he performs 10 tracks with his regular sextet (plus guests) in a programme of original music having a wide spectrum of influences. The band has worked together for many years and Berkman, like Duke Ellington before, likes to write for his ensemble with individual players in mind.
