Tom Petty straddled the divide separating classic rock and new wave, revitalizing and reinvigorating the big jangle of the Byrds and the garage rock roar of the Rolling Stones with his earliest records with the Heartbreakers in the late 1970s. Over the next decades, Petty expanded and refined this blend, almost always with guitarist Mike Campbell and keyboardist Benmont Tench – the musicians who had played with him since the early '70s, when they all were in the rambling country-rock outfit Mudcrutch – by his side.

UK two CD Tour Edition includes a bonus CD containing 12 brilliant live tracks, taken mainly from the 2010 Mojo US tour. 2010 album from the veteran rockers, their first album in eight years. The first thing that hits you about Mojo is that this is the sound of a band playing together in a room - not a studio - facing each other, all singing and playing at the same time. The music is alive, with no overdubs or studio trickery. What you hear is what they created on the spot at that time. Tom Petty says, "With this album, I want to show other people what I hear with the band. Mojo is where the band lives when it's playing for itself." As for the songs, Mojo showcases a wide variety of American music from Rock 'n' Roll to Country and both electric and acoustic Blues. Mojo has juice and guts but it also has some sweet balladry for the slow dancers and even a wacked-out Reggae number that is unlike anything that Heartbreakers have done before. It's the kind of album nobody's supposed to be able to make anymore. It got here just in time.

Bob Dylan broke free from his rigid setlist at the end of show in Broomfield, Colorado earlier this week to honor the late Tom Petty with a moving rendition of his 1991 hit “Learning to Fly.” It was the first time he’d honored an artist by covering of his tunes right after he passed away since he played “Rumble” in honor of Link Wray back in 2005, but it wasn’t a huge surprise. Petty and Dylan became close when they toured together in 1986 and got grew even tighter a few years later when they formed the Traveling Wilburys. “It’s shocking, crushing news,” Dylan told Rolling Stone right after Petty passed away. “I thought the world of Tom. He was a great performer, full of the light, a friend, and I’ll never forget him.”

Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released on October 19, 1979. This was the first of three Petty albums originally released by the Backstreet Records label, distributed by MCA Records. It built on the commercial success and critical acclaim of his two previous albums and reached #2 on the Billboard album chart. The album went on to become certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
