Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonatas with Varied Reprises (comp. 1758-9, publ. 1760) constituted a bold experiment. Spelling out every repeat, Bach applies to each the art of variation. Starting off as a service ("play this and you'll sound as if you're improvising"), the opus ends up a masterclass in variation. Tom Beghin, playing his own beloved clavichord, enacts the role of the keyboardist- composer who repeats himself, while never saying the same thing twice.

Blue Sounds is a set of meditations on a color - from its abstractness as an electromagnetic wave to Blues as a scale, a genre and a harmonic structure. All three works were written for Tom Hicks and mark a growth in fluency and an experimental approach to the sonority of the piano.

"There is no crowd like an expectant crowd. Hailed by Gilad Hekselman as "one of the world's finest guitarists," Tom Ollendorff certainly had some billing to live up to as he kicked off the Irish leg of an international tour to promote Open House (Fresh Sound Records, 2023). Just his second album, following the impressive debut A Song For You (Fresh Sound Records, 2021), it may seem premature to burden the young English guitarist with such a loaded label, but in this short but brilliant set Ollendorff allayed any fears that this was a case of hype. If the shoe fits…

One From the Heart is the score to the most misunderstood of Francis Ford Coppola's films. Far ahead of its time in terms of technology, use of color, montage, and set design, its soundtrack is the only thing that grounds it to earth. Coppola's movie is a metaphorical retelling of the exploits of Zeus and Hera set in Las Vegas. Coppola claims to have been taken with the male-female narrative implications of the track "I Don't Talk to Strangers," off Tom Waits' Foreign Affairs album. That cut was a duet with Bette Midler. Midler wasn't available for One From the Heart, however, so Waits chose Crystal Gayle as his vocal foil. The result is one of the most beautifully wrought soundtrack collaborations in history…

Along with producer Bones Howe, Waits and Gayle cut their duets largely from the studio floor, live with the small combo-style studio band that included the saxophonist Teddy Edwards, drummer Shelly Manne…

Tom Waits is one of the most influential musicians in the world today, an artist who never rests on his laurels. He continues to re-invent music, push boundaries and create new sounds. On Real Gone, the up tempo tracks are some of the rawest and most kinetic he's ever laid down…He's never sounded like he's had this much fun…while the ballads are among his most beautiful and even chilling at times. Real Gone also contains his first overtly political song, "The Day After Tomorrow", a plaintive letter home from a young soldier in the middle of a war. Taken as a whole, the experience is breathtaking.

"Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards" is a limited edition three CD set by Tom Waits, originally released in November 2006. The album is divided into three sections, with each disc being a separate collection in its own. It borrows from Tom Waits’ rock sound, with the first disc being blues and rock-based, the second centred on slow-tempo, melancholic ballads, and the third on more experimental compositions. Additionally, the record contains influences of other genres, including folk, gospel, jazz and roots music. Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards received universal acclaim from critics, who lauded its experimentation and composition, as well as Waits' vocals. It was listed as one of the highest-scoring albums of the year in Metacritic, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. Furthermore, it was a fair commercial success, charting in the United States Billboard 200, as well as in Australia, Switzerland and Austria, reaching the top twenty in the latter.

This Principato's release is a real gem on which he demonstrates a substantial amount of versatility moving from Jazz to Blues to Flamengo to Rock. All of the songs are of on an even, moderately paced tempo, making the stylistic changes subtle. Anyone familiar with Tom Principato knows that if imaginative, expressive, blistering guitar solos are your weakness, he's gonna have you hooked to his music. On this CD, you get a hearty helpin' of Tom's own recipe, with all except one song being original Principato compositions.
