Although it'll be easy to spot a personal favorite or two missing, Anthology of Tom Waits does an excellent job of rounding up highlights from his Asylum recordings, including "Ol' 55," "Heart of Saturday Night," "I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love With You," "Tom Traubert's Blues," and "Jersey Girl." Many of his Asylum albums are worthwhile on their own terms, but as an introduction or sampler, this is first-rate. ~ AllMusic Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine

The Story So Far: The Very Best of Rod Stewart is a 2001 Rod Stewart career-retrospective compilation album, which summarizes his solo work beginning with material from his 1971 breakthrough album Every Picture Tells a Story until his 2001 album Human. For contractual reasons, only two songs from his Mercury Records tenure ("Maggie May" and "You Wear It Well") were included (a third song from the Mercury era, "Reason to Believe", was included in a live acoustic version from the Warner Bros. album Unplugged…and Seated). The rest of the material is from different albums released under Warner Bros. Records. The compilation was particularly notable for dividing the songs between rock and pop tunes on the first disc (A Night Out) and love songs on the second disc (A Night In).

Though Paul Winter is today known for his blend of world music and new age as leader of the Paul Winter Consort, in the early days of his career, he was the leader of a promising jazz band. Winning a contest that landed his mostly collegiate band a record contract with Columbia Records, Winter sought veterans to round out his group, while also applying and receiving the opportunity to lead his band for six months into Latin America on a very successful U.S. State Department-sponsored goodwill tour.

This collection on the U.K.'s Soul Brother imprint is a very compelling look at a big slice of Freddie Hubbard's long career as a leader, and one that gets ignored for the most part. Hubbard recorded over 20 records between Backlash, his Atlantic debut in 1966, and Ride Like the Wind for Elektra in 1982, with lengthy stops at Columbia and CTI (as well some straight hard bop and post-bop outings for labels Fantasy and Pablo). In many cases, some of these original recordings were not only disregarded by more traditional jazzheads, they were regarded with outright hostility. It didn't matter to Hubbard, however, because at the time, these were among his best-selling albums and connected with the public deeply.

Field Songs is the fifth solo album by Mark Lanegan, released in 2001. The two largest instrumental contributors are Mike Johnson and Ben Shepherd. The album also features Duff McKagan of Velvet Revolver (ex-Guns N' Roses) as well as Lanegan's ex-wife, Wendy Rae Fowler. The album represents a departure of sorts for the singer. While retaining the acoustic atmosphere of his previous solo efforts, Field Songs incorporates Middle Eastern influences ("No Easy Action") as well as experimental musical landscapes ("Miracle," "Blues for D") which elicited comparisons from critics to Tom Waits.[citation needed] Lanegan's gravelly, gin-soaked vocals on "Don't Forget Me" and "Fix" is balanced out by his delicate delivery featured on "Kimiko's Dream House" and "Pill Hill Serenade," which could be the saddest song the singer has ever written. "Blues for D" was co-written by Lanegan and Soundgarden bassist Ben Shepherd. Chris Goss sings on "She Done too Much".
