Naxos have stepped in enterprisingly and chosen a programme that is not only most attractive in its own right, but which also includes the key items used in the fascinating film about the conjectural relationship between Marin Marais and his reclusive mentor, Sainte-Colombe (Tous les matins du monde). Spectre de la Rose consists of a first-rate group of young players, led by Alison Crum, who plays in a dignified but austere style which at first seems cool by which is very effective in this repertoire. Le Badinage is perhaps a little stiff and unsmiling, but the key item, Marais’s eloquent lament for his teacher, Tombeau pour Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, is restrained and touching. Good, bright, forward recording, vividly declaiming the plangent viola da gamba timbre.

Following on from the critical success of their debut recording, Fantasticus release their second album for Resonus Classics with an selection of French Baroque chamber works. Here, the trio – Rie Kimura (baroque violin), Robert Smith (viola da gamba) and Guillermo Brachetta (harpsichord) – perform an exquisite programme of French Baroque chamber works focussing on a theme of ‘musical portraits’. The recording includes popular and lesser-known works by composers such as Jean-Philippe Rameau, Marin Marais, François Francoeur, Jean-Marie Leclair, Jacques Duphly and Louis-Antoine Dornel.

The year 1715 marks the tercentenary of the death of the Sun King. As well as being the autocratic personality who plunged his country into famine with his endless battles, Louis XIV was also an artistic system developed from beginning to end of his 60-year reign. At the moment when Versailles became the palace we know today, music played a crucial role in his royal ascent, meticulously arranged around him, his court, his desires and his hunts. From the blossoming of the young Louis to the pomp of Versailles, by way of the musical accompaniment to the events of an ordinary day in the palace, the artists of harmonia mundi lay the table out before us; the banquet will be truly royal.

The most substantial pieces here are the set of variations of La folia, and the Tombeau pour M-deSte Colombe in memory of Marais's mentor. His idiom embodies a paradox that's peculiarly French, in that it demands a very high technical standard, yet its proper expression requires the utmost restraint. The young Finnish viol-player, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola, is a founder-member of Phantasm.

“The most substantial pieces here are the set of variations of La folia, and the Tombeau pour M-deSte Colombe in memory of Marais's mentor. His idiom embodies a paradox that's peculiarly French, in that it demands a very high technical standard, yet its proper expression requires the utmost restraint. The young Finnish viol-player, Markku Luolajan-Mikkola, is a founder-member of Phantasm. Here he holds his own with elegance and reserve, although in the slower pieces one might have wished for more rhythmic flexibility. The continuo section consists of another viol-player, and a theorbo or harpsichord (though in the variations on La folia, the two are combined). This works well for the most part, though the high partials of the harpsichord tend to drown the viols: the lute is far less obtrusive…”
