Guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine really hits his stride on Maximum Security. While it's not all that different from his first album, Edge of Insanity, it's just much better. The album's captivating neoclassical/fusion forays are filled with plenty of beautiful melodies and hair-raising solos; MacAlpine simply lights up the fretboard – and the keyboard, for that matter. Opening with a stormy harpsichord motif, the album's leadoff track, "Autumn Lords," sounds promising from the start. The piece soars with dramatic classical precision and features some truly breathtaking guitar/keyboard interplay.

Released in 1997, Violent Machine is the 10th recording by virtuoso guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine. This record was a musical departure for MacAlpine, as he explored a different direction, incorporating more of a fusion jazz sound into his metal/neo-classical contexts, but all the while capturing his trademark guitar style. Anyone who has heard MacAlpine play live knows what an incredible keyboardist he is – and this is the first record that Tony has released that displays his virtuosity on what is his primary instrument. The CD was recorded in the summer of 1996 in Los Angeles and features Mike Teranna on Drums (Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage), Kevin Chown on bass and MacAlpine on guitar and keyboards.

This is built atop a formidable rhythmic foundation laid down by Hungarian drum sensation Gergo Borlai (Scott Henderson, Gary Willis, Hiram Bullock), and returning bassist Pete Griffin (Generation Axe Tour, Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, Zappa Plays Zappa) who also played on Tony’s previous album and live DVD, Concrete Gardens.

This 4-CD set has been re-mastered by Simon Phillips and includes a twenty-page booklet packed with photos, liner notes, and a detailed history of the band and the music. Packaged in deluxe O-Sleeve In a world of recycled or transient musical ideas, it's rare for any band to be truly ground-breaking and innovative. Too often, acts merely create poorly executed retrograde musical concepts that could never be classed as genre-leading. There are of course a few exceptions, many of whom are more familiar names to the uninitiated than Planet X. Yet this band was able to accomplish what others merely dreamed of - inventing their own genre and leaving a high watermark for others to attempt and equal. Featured artists include Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati, Brett Garsed, Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Johnson, Tony MacAlpine, Dave Larue, and Tom Kennedy.
