Next month, Now That’s What I Call Music will release a genre-spanning ‘Era’ release called The Sound of the Suburbs 1977-1980. In 4CD form, this set offers 80 tracks encompassing punk, new wave, reggae, ska, mod, post-punk and electronic. They were all initially released between 1977 and the end of 1980, and artists include The Undertones, The Clash, Elvis Costello, The Boomtown Rats, The Jam, The Cure, The Police, The Specials, The Beat, Japan, Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers, PIL, Devo, Skids, The Vibrators, XTC, John Foxx, The B-52s and many more. Full tracklistings for the formats are listed below. Whether this ‘Era’ release is the start of a new series or a one-off remains to be seen.

The album runs from the beginnings of hard rock in the late 60s (Deep Purple, Iron Butterfly) through the mid-70s (Dr Feelgood, Hawkwind) via punk from the UK (The Damned, The Stranglers) and the US (Ramones, Richard Hell & The Voidoids) to new wave (Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Television). There's also space for eighties US metal (Faith No More, Skid Row), UK alternative rock (Echo & The Bunnymen, The Jesus & Mary Chain) and tracks from the new romantic artists that were inspired by New Wave (A Flock Of Seagulls, The Associates) alongside British rockers from the 90s and 00s (The Darkness, Terrorvision). "Rock And New Wave: The Ultimate Collection" features 100 anthems to appeal to any fan of guitar music.

Signing Off was UB40's first album and it featured a mix of reggae and dub material which was lyrically politically charged and socially conscious, while musically it was reverb-heavy, doom-laden yet mellifluous, best exemplified in the hits "King" and "Food For Thought" as well as the searing "Burden of Shame". It reached #2 on the UK Albums Chart and spent a total of 71 weeks on the chart, and received a Platinum certification by BPI on 11 June 1981.
