Tower of Power (or TOP for short) is an American R&B-based horn section and band, originating in Oakland, California, that has been performing since 1968. They are best known for their funky soul sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass-guitar lines. There have been several lead vocalists, the most famous being Lenny Williams, who fronted the band between early 1973 and late 1974, the period of their greatest commercial success. Their biggest hits include "You're Still a Young Man", "So Very Hard to Go","Soul With a Capital S", "Soul Vaccination", "What Is Hip?", and "Don't Change Horses (in the Middle of a Stream)."

Vocalist Lenny Williams is the guiding light through R&B-flavored cuts like the bouncing "Don't Change Horses (In the Middle of the Stream)" and the dramatic ballad "Just When We Start Makin' It." It's the signature instrumental "Squib Cakes," however, that opens the floodgates to all the funky power that the band can muster; it's the group's premiere showcase, with hearty contributions from keyboardist Chester Thompson, drummer David Garibaldi, and the entire stellar horn section.

What can I say? After forty years of making incredible soul music, Tower Of Power comes out with yet another blockbuster album! They sound great and it's all here: the magical sound of the Fillmore concert in 2008 courtesy of Castillo, "Doc" Kupka, Francis Rocco's infusion of funk, David Garibaldi, Larry Braggs, Roger Smith, Tom E. Politzer on saxophone and more, trumpeter Adolfo Acosta, "Iron Mike" Bogart and 2007 inductee Mark Harper. I agree with the reviewer who writes that there's not a single dud on this album; TOP is one of the very, very few groups that could ever even hope to pull off a set of covers that is all this good!!! The guest appearances by the likes of Joss Stone, Tom Jones and Huey Lewis only make this even better.

"All I wanted to do was to get to Sacramento to play the topless bars," recalls tower of power founder and tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo about his band's early days in the late '60s. Clearly, the funk horn ensemble has accomplished much more than that. A major influence on fusion and smooth jazz, the 10-piece band has recorded albums for Epic, Columbia, and Warner Bros. and continues to tour the summer jazz-festival circuit. Soul Vaccination: Tower of Power Live, features 15 of the band's most popular songs as recorded during a 1998 world tour. Half of the tunes were recorded at the Fillmore in San Francisco, where the band performed frequently back in the day.
