Smart, funny, sickly and sometimes just plain unconscious, Mark Renton is a hero of our times. Set in an underbelly of Edinburgh the city fathers never dreamed of, this is the story of Mark and his so-called friends–a bunch of losers, liars, psychos, thieves and junkies. This tragi- comedy charts the disintegration of their friendship as they proceed, seemingly inevitably, towards self-destruction. Mark alone has the insight and opportunity to escape his fate–but does he really want to "choose life"? On and off heroin, he continually weighs the pros and cons of straight living: "car, career, family, fucking big television, washing machines, compact disc players, electrical tin openers, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, starter home, leisurewear, and a choice of sweaters…" When he breaks it all down, choosing life doesn't seem all that promising and he's off to the next scheme and score.

Mark Renton, a young man with few prospects and fewer ambitions, lives in economically depressed Edinburgh. Like most of his friends, Renton is a heroin addict who loves the drug's blissful nothingness; financing his habit also provides excitement and challenges that his life otherwise lacks. After one too many brushes with the law, Renton kicks heroin and moves to London, where he finds a job, a flat, and something close to peace of mind. However, his friends all arrive at his doorstep on the trail of a big score, leading Renton back into drugs and crime.

Crime pays, but not very well for a handful of burglars in this drama with comic overtones. Jumbo (Shane Meadows) heads up a gang of very-small-time thieves in an economically crippled British town near Nottingham. Jumbo and his mates Malc (Mat Hand), Willy (Jimmy Hynd), and Bets (Leon Lammond) are having a hard time unloading their latest score – a large supply of dog food – which generates a significant amount of tension between the hoods and their usual fence, Lenny (Tim Cunningham). Meanwhile, Malc's girlfriend Kate (Gena Kawecka) is getting tired of the way Jumbo slaps around his significant other, Ruby (Dena Smiles) and forces Malc to choose between staying with the gang or staying with her (and their child). Small Time marked the feature-length directorial debut for writer, director, and star Shane Meadows; it was shown theatrically with one of Meadows' earlier short subjects, Where's The Money, Ronnie?

James McAvoy stars in director Jon S. Baird's outrageous dark comedy based on the book by Irvine Welsh, and centered on the exploits of a debauched cop on a mission to crack a murder case, earn a big promotion, and win back his estranged wife. Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson (McAvoy) is unlike any cop on the force. A pervert, a drug addict, and an irredeemable jerk, he thinks he's in control, even as his life spirals into oblivion. Now, in order to earn a major promotion, Detective Robertson will actually have to work, instead of hustling his way though each day in a haze of drugs and alcohol. Meanwhile, the harder he tries to get a grip, the further his future seems to slip out of reach. Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Imogen Poots, Shirley Henderson, and Joanne Froggat co-star.

Black and white, gay and straight, mothers and daughters, class, and coming of age. Jo is working class, in her teens, living with her drunk and libidinous mother in northern England. When mom marries impulsively, Jo is out on the streets; she and Geoffrey, a gay co worker who's adrift himself, find a room together. Then Jo finds herself pregnant after a one night stand with Jimmy, a Black sailor. Geoffrey takes over the preparations for the baby's birth, and becomes, in effect, the child's father. The three of them seem to have things sorted out when Jo's mother reappears on the scene, assertive and domineering. Which "family" will emerge?
