The tango is known to have originated in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, a casserole of local and foreign influences, full of brothels, knives, scoundrels and a few broken hearted heroes. Lesser known is the facet it developed later on and out of this context when the tango reached not only the high European saloons but also the ears and minds of some of the XXth century´s most important composers. Seduced perhaps by its apparent sensuality and articulated rhythmic pulsations, some of these composers were inspired enough to write their own tangos. With varied instrumentations, be it piano solo, a chamber ensemble or a symphony orchestra, they brought their own visions of tango and traduced them into their own musical language, one that was immersed in the idiom of the 20th century. Some of these works have been able to stay in the standard repertoire of musicians and ensembles, like the tangos of Albeniz or Stravinsky.

A series of high-quality concerts in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, at the Rheingau Musik Festival, the Schleswig Holstein Musik Festival, the Delft Festival, among others, launched the success story of the Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble, which has since become well established on international concert stages and festivals. The subsequent recording of three successful CDs testifies to the success story, the vast repertoire, and the versatility of the ensemble. From the very beginning, the Isabelle van Keulen Ensemble has been dazzling its audiences through its depth of musical expression, its technical brilliance, and the simultaneous mixture of melancholy and severity which is so typical of the Tango Nuevo, pairing great joy in playing with intimacy

Hoy quiero contarles un poco del CD “Andamiento”, del baterista Martín Muguerza. Este disco vino conmigo del Festival Jazz a la Calle, en la ciudad de Mercedes, y esperó casi dos meses hasta que tuviera tiempo de escucharlo bien. Le puse play por primera vez una noche de verano. La luz tenue de la habitación era la que entraba por las ventanas abiertas. Ya estaba baja, grande y roja la Luna creciente. Nuestro satélite volvió dos veces al mismo lugar y yo sigo escuchándolo en estado de asombro y fascinación.
