This debut album of The Danish Piano Trio presents a fascinating string of Romantic trios. From the perfectly balanced world of Danish music's 'godfather' Niels W. Gade over the sensitive and dramatic turn-of-the-century art of P.E. Lange-Müller, the album concludes with the beautiful single-movement Mountain Flowers from 1908 by the hyper-Romantic prodigy Rued Langgaard.

What ensemble could be more predestined for Ludwig van Beethovens piano trios than the Vienna Piano Trio? Following its brilliant beginning with the Trios op. 70, this top ensemble from Vienna now presents the magnificent and mighty Archduke Trio op. 97 in surprisingly close album association with the standout Trio in C minor from op. 1, a work with trailblazing qualities that immediately caught Joseph Haydns attention. And with a beginning that must have immediately irritated listeners of those times: is that still the introduction or already the theme?

Brahms composed the first of his three Piano Trios aged 21, then pruned and recomposed it in his late 50s. The Oliver Schnyder Trio’s new Brahms set is different from most in that they include both versions. Indeed, they are ardent advocates for the earlier one, which bursts with youthful vigour but sprawls under the weight of its own ideas, and is by some way the longest work on the recording. The only sleeve note is a letter from Oliver Schnyder addressed to Brahms in which he castigates the composer for what he sees as a lack of self-belief.

When Beethoven assigned the opus number one to his three piano trios, it was evident that the then 22-year-old composer would explore, advance and co-create the composition rules, and that he would very nearly transcend that which was comprehensible to his contemporaries. Upon hearing the first private performance of Op. 1, Joseph Haydn purportedly voiced his doubts as to whether the ordinary listener would be able to understand No. 3. Beethoven experimented with this combination of instruments too - with the form, harmonies and other facets. The Piano Trio in D major, Op. 70 No. 1 may have had its roots in sketches for an opera based on Shakespeare's drama Macbeth that Beethoven was contemplating at the time. The spectral music of the slow movement, featuring strange modulations and said to be a reworking of the Witches Chorus intended for the opera, earned the piece the nickname "Ghost Trio".

After the successful release of the Brahms Piano Trios, audite label is now presenting a second release with the Trio Testore. It sheds light on a special side of Russian chamber music: Tchaikovsky's and Rachmaninov's works for piano trio are conceived as dedications and memorials. This fact determines their individual form and their personal, passionate tone. They are thus exemplary for a tradition that made its effect well into the 20th century.

In 1799, after having made a name for himself with major compositions in the genres of the piano trio, piano sonata, violin sonata, and string quartet, but before finishing his first symphony, Beethoven wrote a work for mixed strings and winds. This piece, the Septet op. 20, would become one of his most popular compositions, with a large number of arrangements, including the one for piano trio on this disc. The form is clearly related to the divertimenti by Mozart, with six movements that alternate fast and slow tempos.
