Ok. This album is killer. Cecilia Della Peruti is pretty much destroying it here. Gothic Tropic knows what they are doing. Peruti herself is very experienced. Career minded is probably the better word: her Linkedin profile consists of nothing more than a long list of bands performed in dating back from when, I guess, she emerged from her mother’s womb. Oh, and writing film scores. Also, her mother is a well-known opera singer. And Dad’s a jazz composer. And she’s from New Jersey, where only the strong survive.

The return of storied Southern Gothic electronic entity Telefon Tel Aviv is as unexpected as it is impressive. Their three influential albums of the 2000’s—Fahrenheit Fair Enough, Map Of What Is Effortless, and Immolate Yourself—charted an increasingly turbulent and textured vision of post-IDM synthetic songcraft, until the sudden passing of founding member Charlie Cooper in 2009 ceased the project, presumably forever.

Following the ambitious quadruple-LP sprawl of 2016's R M H Q: Headquarters, veteran New Zealand guitarist Roy Montgomery composed a much shorter album and invited several female singers to grace his rolling, multi-dimensional guitar soundscapes. Montgomery wrote the lyrics as well as the music on the album's first side, while the guests on the second side expressed their own thoughts. "Apparition" begins the album with a slow fade-in of countless layers of guitars, resembling thick sheets of rain.
