"This is not a good recording": this is how the well-known Viennese theater critic Karl Löbl judges this old Legge production from July 1957, which was originally edited by the EMI. The conductor seems "too good for him", Maria Callas, according to his impression, "obviously does not feel comfortable vocally in this part" and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf "does not fit in with the rest of the ensemble".

This recording of Turandot, Puccini’s spectacular final opera marks a number of important firsts. Before the recording sessions in Rome in March 2022, Sir Antonio Pappano had never conducted Turandot; neither Sondra Radvanovsky, who takes soaring title role, nor Jonas Kaufmann as Turandot’s suitor, Calaf – who sings ‘Nessun dorma’ – had previously performed the opera. It is also the first studio recording of Turandot to include the entire, crucial final scene as completed after Puccini’s death in 1925 by Franco Alfano.

Busoni never came closer to his dream of Italian music than with that night on May 11 1917 of double performance in Zurich, which he calls himself 'La Nuova Commedia dell' Arte' I ('Turandot') and II ('Arlecchino'). In the unusually short time from December 1916 to March 1917 Busoni reworked the already existing material to the Incidental Music of Gozzis 'Turandot' into an opera. This happen 4 years before Puccini started to work on the same contend. 'Arleccino', though in immediate neighbourhood to 'Dr. Faust' looking almost like a secondary work, is perhaps the composer's actual key work. The speaking hero of his 'theatralische Capriccio' represents a role model, which is at times more important to him than his aesthetic Faust, especially as the the World War increases.

Turandot is an opera in three acts by Giacomo Puccini, set to a libretto in Italian by Giuseppe Adami and Renato Simoni. Though Puccini's first interest in the subject was based on his reading of Friedrich Schiller's adaptation of the play, his work is most nearly based on the earlier text Turandot by Carlo Gozzi. The story, set in China, involves prince Calàf who falls in love with the cold princess Turandot. To obtain permission to marry her, a suitor has to solve three riddles; any false answer results in death. Calàf passes the test, but Turandot still hesitates to marry him. He offers her a way out : he agrees to die should she be able guess his real name…
