Vocalist Phil Mogg, guitarist Mick Bolton, bassist Pete Way, and drummer Andy Parker formed the British space metal outfit UFO in 1969. Originally known as Hocus Pocus, the group, which took the name UFO in honor of a London club, debuted in 1971 with UFO 1. Both the album and its follow-up, the same year's Flying, found great success in Japan, France, and Germany, but was barely noticed in the band's native country; as a result, their third effort, 1972's Live, was released only in Japan. In 1974, Bolton left the group; after brief trial runs with ex-Pink Fairies guitarist Larry Wallis and future Whitesnake member Bernie Marsden, former Scorpion Michael Schenker stepped in as a permanent replacement in time to record 1974's Phenomenon, which sported a harder-edged guitar sound.

UFO, an English hard rock institution, helped pave the way for the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, with seminal acts like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, and Def Leppard citing the band as a significant influence. Led by vocalist Phil Mogg, who has been the group's sole constant member since its formation in 1968, UFO enjoyed commercial success in the '70s and '80s with hits like "Rock Bottom," "Lights Out," and "Doctor, Doctor." Their 1979 concert album Strangers in the Night is often cited as one of the greatest live rock albums. UFO underwent numerous lineup changes over the years – guitarist Michael Schenker, formerly of Scorpions, joined the band in 1973 and contributed significantly to their sound before leaving in 1978 – but managed to release 22 studio albums, 14 live recordings, and numerous compilations before ceasing operations in 2024.

However, after 1978's Obsession, Schenker left the group, first to rejoin the Scorpions and later to form his own band. Despite the addition of guitarist Paul Chapman, the next UFO LP, No Place to Run, failed to match the success of its predecessors.

Founded in London in 1968 by singer Phil Mogg, bassist Pete Way, guitarist Mick Bolton and Andy Parker on drums, UFO are considered one of the best classic rock acts to date, and a key influence on many of the 1980s and 1990s hard rock and heavy metal bands. The group have undergone many line-up changes with singer Phil Mogg as the sole constant until April 2024, and sold over 20 million albums worldwide, achieving their biggest success between 1973 and 1978 with young guitar wizard Michael Schenker, and world hits such as ‘Doctor Doctor,’ ‘Rock Bottom’ and ‘Only You Can Rock Me.’ UFO LIVE offers a glimpse into some of UFO’s mesmerising live performances in the group’s early career; with excerpts from their TV appearances at Germany’s legendary Beat Club on Dec 31st, 1970; France’s Rock En Stock Festival of October 1972, to the band’s show at the world famous Funkausstellung in Berlin in September 1973 (broadcasted at Music Today on October 13th, 1973), and an energetic performance at the Roundhouse in London on Dec 18th, 1975, broadcasted by French TV’s Juke Box on Aug 12th, 1976. Includes the iconic live version of the German Top 30 hit song ‘Boogie For George’ from UFO’s first album UFO 1; the band’s fan-favourite heavy version of the Eddie Cochran classic ‘C’mon Everybody,’ and ‘Prince Kajuku’ from their UFO 2: Flying album, which reached #26 in the German charts in 1971, featuring guitarist Michael Schenker’s very first TV-appearance with UFO at the Funkausstellung Berlin 1973.

Only the most dedicated UFO fan could possibly keep track of all the live releases that have surfaced over the years. Many of these live recordings were not necessarily approved by the band, and as a result, some have been good, and some have been downright stinky. Finally, the UFO lads have taken steps to regain control of their concert recordings, by issuing a mammoth six-disc box set, 2009's Official Bootleg Box Set. UFO have always been one of those groups best experienced on the concert stage, as evidenced by 1979's Strangers in the Night, which is widely regarded as one of hard rock/heavy metal's all-time great live sets…

Walk on Water finds the classic mid-'70s UFO lineup – featuring Michael Schenker – reuniting for another go-round. Much has changed in rock & roll since Schenker last played in UFO, but in UFO's world, things remain the same. The group continues to pound out heavy rockers without changing its formula much at all. To the disinterested observer or critic, this means Walk on Water is boring, but UFO diehards may be pleasantly surprised by the record, since it finds the band playing with energy and conviction, even if the music is predictable.
