Messiaen's Catalog of Birds for piano is one of the wonders of modern music, a work apart from schools, movement, intellectual constructions, and programmatic declarations concerning the future of music. Perhaps the engaging, enigmatic, spellbinding nature of this music proceeds from Messiaen's unique source of inspiration: birdsong. Non-human, the source of Messiaen's music is nevertheless not alien since Messiaen celebrates the sounds of nature, which he, as a devout Catholic, experiences as a divine creation. It's difficult to imagine a better interpreter of Messiaen's powerful visions than pianist Anatol Ugorski, who plunges himself into Messiaen's spiritual universe with the passionate abandon of a devoted seeker.

Classical pianist who enjoyed his greatest success after relocating to Germany. During a concert tour of Boulez in Leningrad in the autumn of 1968, in a period of relative cultural openness (shortly after the Prague Spring and the invasion of the Warsaw Pact troops), Ugorski's enthusiastic applause was interpreted as a political gesture. He was summoned by the Rectorate and suspected of being politically unreliable, because of his passion for Western contemporary music. His career was stopped for more than ten years and he was confined to work in the provinces, as accompanist of a Young Pioneers choir. Although the choir was only allowed to perform for provincial schoolchildren and in private performances within the Eastern Bloc, their concerts were well-attended.

Anatol Ugorski is a classical pianist from Russia who grew up in what was then called Leningrad where he studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory and the Conservatory of Leningrad. His preference for contemporary Western music led to a restriction for ten years as an accompanist to a Soviet choir. His family escaped to East Berlin and then to the West. He recorded 'Diabelli Variations' in 1991 and went on to perform and record with the Chicago Symphony, Concertgebouw in the Netherlands, the Czech Philharmonic and Orchestre de Paris. His albums feature music by Beethoven, Chopin, Messiaen, Moussorgski and Schumann. 'Scriabin: Piano Concerto' (1999) was nominated for a Grammy Award as Best Instrumental Soloist Performance with Orchestra. The 13-disc box set 'Anatol Ugorski - The Complete Recordings On Deutsche Grammophon' came out in 2018.

Frédéric Chopin was the most famous composer of Polish origin in the history of Western concert music. He was a progressive who revolutionized the harmonic content, the texture, and the emotional quality of the small piano piece, turning light dance forms, nocturnes, and study genres into profound works that were both daring and deeply inward. Born Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin to a French father and a Polish mother, probably on March 1, 1810, he was a native of Zelazowa Wola village west of Warsaw.
