Saxophonist Hans Teuber and bassist Jeff Johnson began their musical association in 1990 when their paths intersected in Seattle. Both had recently arrived and they soon discovered the chemistry between them was substantial and uncanny. Performing together on all five of Johnson's recordings on Origin Records and on hundreds of performances, recordings and concerts over the last 25 years, their musical collaboration is highly intuitive and empathetic. Both diligently mentored in their teens by veteran jazz musicians, while simultaneously playing in a wide variety of musical situations, they each bring a rich palette of influences to their performances. From free improvisations to jazz standards, it's all touched upon here somewhere, in the moment, completely natural, conversational and without pretension.

Gravitas and weightlessness may seem like odd compeers, but both are ill at ease with one another and beautifully in league in the music of pianist Frank Kimbrough. On Solstice—the latest of many fine trio dates in Kimbrough's discography, and his first release on the Pirouet imprint—Kimbrough does what he does best, conjuring the elements through his piano and capturing the emotional essence of the songs he inhabits. Originals are scarce here—the muted and mutable, blues-coated "Question's The Answer" is the lone Kimbrough composition—but the music is brimming with originality.

Swiss pianist Irene Schweizer's celebrated duets with jazz drumming greats, Andrew Cyrille, Han Bennink and Gunter Baby Sommer must have been impressive spectacles. This album denotes her third duo album with her infamous fellow countryman, drummer Pierre Favre. Needless to state, the artists' extraordinary interactions are in full force via these concise pieces that were not arranged or rehearsed prior to the live gigs, spanning March 22-24, 2013 at a venue in Zurich. Even though these works skirt the free-zone, structural song-forms tender the underpinning for the musicians' uncanny intuition that of course, matures over time amid insights garnered from previous collaborations.

Bear’s Sonic Journals: Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970 presents restored and mastered recordings of the Allman Brothers Band at the Fillmore East on February 11, 13 & 14, 1970, captured by legendary Grateful Dead soundman, Owsley Stanley, a/k/a Bear, who is known for the purity of his “Sonic Journal” recordings and their uncanny ability to place the listener in the venue.This is essential listening for Allman Brothers Band fans, showcasing an early incarnation of the band with Duane Allman in full form and featuring the earliest known live concert recording of “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed,” which had just been penned by Dickey Betts shortly before these shows. The tapes were recorded just one year before the band’s landmark At Fillmore East album from the same venue.
