If Unknown Pleasures was Joy Division at their most obsessively, carefully focused, ten songs yet of a piece, Closer was the sprawl, the chaotic explosion that went every direction at once. Who knows what the next path would have been had Ian Curtis not chosen his end? But steer away from the rereading of his every lyric after that date; treat Closer as what everyone else thought it was at first – simply the next album – and Joy Division's power just seems to have grown. Allmusic 5/5
Joy Division's start-to-finish masterpiece

Utterly brilliant.

Let's Active was a jangle pop band based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The principal songwriter and sole continuous member was Mitch Easter, who kept the band active through most of the 1980s. Although critically praised, Let's Active had limited commercial success and are mostly known because of Easter's connections with R.E.M. as the producer of their early albums. The name of the group is taken from a t-shirt sold in Japan bearing the words Let's Active on it. Japanese buyers liked t-shirts with English words printed on them.

Finsbury Park, 9th June 02 With music that celebrates the thrill of the moment and played a pivotal role in the emergence of electronica and techno, New Order established themselves as one of the great bands of the '80s and '90s. Here they're seen in their Finsbury Park concert from June 2002, playing many of their now-classic songs and their 'comeback single', 'Crystal'. A documentary made during the setup and sound check takes the viewer backstage and close-up. Like the companion volume 316, 511 offers one of those rare opportunities to see this enigmatic band on camera talking about their music and their future.

…Hannett's bright, brittle production amplifies everything, creating a swirling hyper-reality that's almost a sonic black hole sucking everything into its vortex – slide guitars, sound clips from "Performance," maniacally looped drum machines, Beatles melodies, drums that are pushed to the front of the mix so it all is a relentless assault, from the ears down to the loins. As jagged and lacerating as all this is, there's a sense of evil glee, that the Mondays want to drag you down to their level, but there's no sense of seduction here; you're either with them or not, as Bummed is music for after you've already succumbed to the dark side.
