Coupling the Hary Janos Suite with Kodaly ’ s two highly contrasted sets of Hungarian dances, urban and rural, is a time - honoured gambit, but Fischer has had the birght idea of adding some of the composer ’ s children ’ s choruses, and instrumental movements from the seldom - heard Hary Janos Singspiel that was the ultimate source for the perennially popular suite, in order to give a broader picture of Kodaly, both as musician and musical humorist. On the whole it works well: the Singspiel extracts are very slight, but the choruses are highly characteristic – and flawlessly sung by superbly disciplined childrens ’ choirs trained, inevitably, in the ‘ Kodaly Method ’. Nevertheless the three principal orchestral works remain the point for buying the disc, and these are very vivid, exciting interpretations. Fischer comes up against stiff competition in Antal Dorati ’ s classic 1973 recording of Hary and the dance - suites with the Philharmonia Hungarica. Dorati is ‘ straighter ’ in his readings of the pieces than Fischer, and the playing packs a tremendous punch: he also adds the Peacock Variations as coupling, and thus probably still remains the first choice.

The accompanying album, Female Trouble, boasted an impressive list of contributors, including Dan Hartman (who also served as a producer), Peter Gabriel, Prince ("Baby Go Go"), George Clinton, David Van Tieghem and Mavis Staples. Around this time, she became a member of the Black Rock Coalition, founded by Vernon Reid of Living Colour.

"Let Me Be the One" was produced by David Frank and Mic Murphy who, at the time, were enjoying much success as The System. Let Me Be the One was much more synth-heavy R&B flavored than her earlier jazz-oriented works. The title song reached #84 on the Billboard R&B Chart.

Aretha Franklin is the Queen of Soul because, well, that's exactly what she is, and her legacy is built on the amazing late-'60s hits she had with Atlantic Records, a run of undisputed classics like "Respect," "I Never Loved a Man," "Chain of Fools," "Baby I Love You," and "Think." She had a few chart hits here and there most notably "Who's Zoomin' Who" and "Jump to It" after her contract with Atlantic ended in the late '70s, and she's never been less than a simply astounding singer, but her 1960s sides are easily the high-water mark of her long career, so it's disappointing to find none of those classic tracks here in this two-disc set, and one could therefore argue convincingly that this package isn't at all "the best of Aretha Franklin." What it is, actually, is a nice survey of the key tracks from her post-Atlantic years, and it's impressive, sure, but one still wants to hear those amazing Atlantic sides. They're that good, and truth be known, they eclipse most of what's presented here.
