When the Rolling Stones returned to the recording studio in 2015, and topped the charts in 2016 with the album Blue & Lonesome, it was a musical trip back to the sweaty London clubs of 1963 that gave them their start. The music the Stones played at the beginning of their career was a long way removed from the pop charts, as Keith Richards later reflected: “When we started playing in London we started off with Chicago blues. If you wanted stardom that was not the way to go!” Many of the songs you will find on this collection featured regularly in the group’s live repertoire as they found their feet in the turbulent pop scene of the early 60s.

Following its launch in the summer of 1968, Trojan Records swiftly became the dominant force on the UK’s West Indian music scene. Over the years that immediately ensued, the company released literally hundreds of 7” singles and albums, showcasing the talents of every Jamaican music maker of note. “No More Heartaches” and “What Am I To Do” were among Trojan’s most popular long players from the early years, when boss reggae ruled the dancehalls both in Jamaica and the UK. Released in 1969 and 1970, respectively, each of the albums showcases a dozen of the finest recordings to date from the catalogue of leading Jamaican producer, Harry ‘J’ Johnson.

Reflecting his status on the reggae scene, leading London-based operator Trojan Records, secured agreements for his finest works, releasing Ranglin’s music on numerous 7” singles and long-playing compilation albums, the last of which was ‘Atlantic 1’, an LP boasting some of Jamaica’s finest vocal and instrumental talent, which the company issued on the its Horse subsidiary in 1975.

This is a compilation made in response to legendary producer Quincy Jones complaining about the hatred from online fans towards his new album, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra, where he used the talents of various modern day rappers and singers to do songs using his older material.
