The Bang Sessions, as most fans of Van the Man know, present Morrison when he is very good and when he is absolutely wretched. The good, of course, is his first solo album, Blowin' Your Mind, an engaging set of ambitious folk-rock which borrows equally from R&B and jazz, winding up with songs as ebullient as "Brown Eyed Girl" and as haunting as "T.B. Sheets," with a lot of ground covered in between. The bad is the songs that he wrote and recorded in a bid to get out of his contract with Bang obstinate, stream-of-conscious ditties and nonsense that he wrote on the spot; it's interesting in theory, but nearly unlistenable in practise.

This collection highlights one of the definitive moments in modern pop music and is sure to please all classic rock enthusiasts! Features Van Morrison at his most heartbreaking, soul-stomping, mystical, spiritual, youthful best! Early in 1967, Van Morrison found himself in New York at the invite of songwriter/producer Bert Berns. Morrison s previous band Them had been hemorrhaging luck and leaking interest after previously riding high on the charts with the smash hit single Baby Please Don t Go. But Them s fame had been as fleeting as Morrison s enjoyment of it and when word leaked out that he was looking for a label to record solo material on, Berns leaped at the opportunity to have Morrison record for the fledgling Bang label.

The Authorized Bang Collection is a triple-disc compilation album by Van Morrison containing every track that Morrison recorded for Bang Records with producer Bert Berns with the full blessing and participation of Morrison. It was released on April 28, 2017 by Legacy Recordings on the Bang label. The first disc, subtitled The Original Masters, contains 17 tracks including every track from Morrison's debut album Blowin' Your Mind!. The second disc, subtitled Bang Sessions & Rarities, contains alternate takes from the Bang sessions. The third disc contains tracks officially issued for the first time, subtitled Contractual Obligation Session. These short songs were recorded by Morrison to fulfill his contractual obligations to Bang. Because Bert's widow Ilene Berns called those tracks 'nonsense,' they remained in the vaults, bootlegs notwithstanding, until this collection was compiled.

The 1967 New York Sessions are comprised of the (much compiled) recordings Van Morrison made for Bang! after his split from Them. Teaming with Brill Building vet producer Bert Berns, Morrison's wild-eyed lyricism is often a tight fit with Berns' straight-ahead commercial sound (see the silly but fun "Chick-a-Boom" for an example). Still, a number of great songs can be found here, including the all-time great "Brown Eyed Girl," "The Back Room," "He Ain't Give You None," and "Ro Ro Rosey." Early versions of tracks from Astral Weeks, "T.B. Sheets" and "Madame George," also appear. Despite Van's objections to being a pop artist, the conflict between the two styles makes for some very interesting and invigorating listening. These sessions aren't vital to the casual Morrison fan, but anyone whose love of the man goes beyond the hits needs to add these to their collection.

Pay the Devil, an album-long foray into country music, shouldn't come as a surprise to Van Morrison fans. It's a logical extension of his love affair with American music. Certainly blues, R&B, soul, and jazz have been at the forefront, but one can go all the way back to the Bang years and find "Joe Harper Saturday Morning," or songs on Tupelo Honey that touch country. More recently, You Win Again, with Linda Gail Lewis, offered two Hank Williams tunes and "Crazy Arms." The Skiffle Sessions with Lonnie Donegan offered traditional Southern tunes including Jimmie Rodgers' "Mule Skinner Blues." Morrison's lyrics have also referenced country music blatantly. Pay the Devil comes from direct sources of inspiration: his father's skiffle band and Ray Charles' historic forays into country on the two volumes of Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music in 1962. The evidence lies in three cuts on this disc, all of which Charles recorded: Curley Williams' "Half as Much," Art Harris and Fred Jay's "What Am I Livin' For," and Hank Williams' "Your Cheatin' Heart."

Mike Scott had been pursuing his grandiose "big music" since he founded the Waterboys, so it came as a shock when he scaled back the group's sound for the Irish and English folk of Fisherman's Blues. Although the arena-rock influences have been toned down, Scott's vision is no less sweeping or romantic, making even the simplest songs on Fisherman's Blues feel like epics. Nevertheless, the album is the Waterboys' warmest and most rewarding record, boasting a handful of fine songs ("And a Bang on the Ear," the ominous "We Will Not Be Lovers," "Has Anybody Here Seen Hank?," and the title track), as well as a surprisingly successful cover of Van Morrison's breathtaking "Sweet Thing."[Fisherman's Blues was reissued in 2006 with a bonus disc containing 14 outtakes, alternate versions, and late-night studio jams. It was reissued again in 2013 as a seven-disc box set featuring 121 tracks from the album sessions, 85 of which had been previously unavailable.]
