Pianist and conductor with an immense repertoire, Vladimir Ashkenazy celebrated his 80th birthday in 2017, which DECCA, his record company, has not forgotten by publishing a choice made by the artist himself to salute this event. A child prodigy, the young Vladimir aroused admiration for his prodigious gifts. At 8, he entered the Moscow Conservatory, at 18, he won second prize at the Frédéric Chopin Competition. The following year he won first prize in succession at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium and the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Here he is launched, but slowed down by the Soviet Union and especially by the KGB which harasses him so that he becomes an “informant” of the regime. He holds on and ends up being able to emigrate with his young Icelandic wife whom he met at the Moscow Conservatory. The couple then moved to London, then to Iceland, where Vladimir participated in the founding of the Reykjavic Arts Festival, of which he remains honorary president. In 1978, the family, they now have 4 children, moved to Switzerland in the canton of Lucerne.

Russian-born Vladimir Ashkenazy has been a towering figure both as a pianist and as a conductor, with interpretations cutting a wide swath across Beethoven, the Romantics, and Russian music. His repertoire extends back to Bach and occasionally forward to contemporary pieces.

Despite the recording dates, the sound and balance are superb, and there's nothing to cloud your sense of Ashkenazy's greatness in all these works. From him every page declares Rachmaninov's nationality, his indelibly Russian nature. What nobility of feeling and what dark regions of the imagination he relishes and explores in page after page of the Third Concerto. Significantly his opening is a very moderate Allegro ma non tanto, later allowing him an expansiveness and imaginative scope hard to find in other more 'driven' or hectic performances. His rubato is as natural as it's distinctive, and his way of easing from one idea to another shows him at his most intimately and romantically responsive.

Beethoven: Diabelli VariationsAshkenazy's piano playing is bright and incisive, with clear articulation and an intellectual depth that does not interfere with the production of warm feeling. He has exceptional control over tone color. His recorded repertory is vast, including complete cycles of the piano concertos of Mozart, Beethoven (three separate times), and Rachmaninov (twice), as well as of the piano sonatas of Beethoven, the piano works of Chopin, and the difficult sonatas of Scriabin. Ashkenazy's productivity has hardly dropped in old age, nor did the technical difficulty of the works he essayed, although he has been less likely to appear in public on the piano. Still recording for Decca, he issued a version of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations, Op. 120, in 2007. The year 2011 alone saw no fewer than 19 Ashkenazy releases as pianist or conductor, including those of such taxing works as the Mahler Symphony No. 6. In 2017, Ashkenazy celebrated his 80th birthday with a new recording of Bach's French Suites, and his historical performances were well treated by recording companies.
