Chopin has been a central part of Ashkenazy's repertory since his participation in the International Chopin Competition at Warsaw in 1955, when he won second prize at the age of eighteen. During the years 1974-1984 Ashkenazy recorded his acclaimed survey of Chopin's solo piano music. In the early part of his recording career he had recorded selected works and from time to time he has revisted key pieces in the studio. This new recital brings together a selection of late Chopin pieces and includes one of Ashkenazy's favourite nocturnes, Op.62 no.1 in B major, a piece which he regularly performs as an encore at his recitals.

FLAC (tracks) | 1:14:19 | 186 Mb
Genre: Classical / Label: Nimbus Alliance

This recording brings together the works of seven composers who were born in Russia between 1882 and 1900. Five of them – Roslavets, Feinberg, Stanchinsky, Protopopov and Mosolov remained in Russia. Two – Obukhov and Lourié – emigrated to France after the Revolution of 1917. Nowadays, these composers are often called “Forgotten Russians” because their works are rarely performed and their names unknown outside a narrow circle of specialists and people interested in Russian art of the first quarter of the twentieth century.

This recording features one of today’s most sought-after conductors, Vladimir Jurowski, who was appointed Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 2007, with many of his recordings on the LPO Label being chosen for special mentions by BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone Magazine. When Rachmaninoff finally settled in Switzerland in the early 1930s, it was here, in the tranquil surroundings he needed for inspiration, that he wrote the Third Symphony. Sir Henry Wood, writing in his autobiography My Life of Music (1938), predicted that Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony would ‘prove as popular as Tchaikovsky’s Fifth’. These arrangements of Rachmaninoff’s 10 Songs were made by Vladimir Jurowski’s grandfather, also called Vladimir (1915–72), whose first experience of Rachmaninoff’s music was in Russia after the Second World War. He orchestrated 10 songs specifically for the celebrated Russian tenor Ivan Kozlovsky, who recorded them with the conductor Kiril Kondrashin.
