The collection may have a few too many songs for some casual fans, but it's the only album that presents all the important Capitol tracks with care, thought, and first-class sound.

David Bowie One of the greatest stars of the rock & roll era, David Bowie evaded easy categorization throughout his career, operating as the artiest rocker within the mainstream and the most accessible musician on the fringe. Bowie may have trafficked in ideas cultivated in the underground, but he was never quite an outsider as far as rock & roll was concerned. From the outset of his career in the 1960s, he attempted to break into the Top 40, playing British blues, mod rock & roll, and ornate pop before finally hitting paydirt as a hippie singer/songwriter. "Space Oddity" gave Bowie his breakthrough in the U.K., reaching the Top Ten in the summer of 1969 – the summer of Apollo 11 – and it belatedly performed a similar feat in America, giving him his first Top 20 hit early in 1973. By that point, Bowie had traded his folkie persona for the glam-rock alien Ziggy Stardust, one of the many shifts of sound and image that came to define his career.

Arguably no other opera singer in music history achieved the same level of international celebrity as tenor Luciano Pavarotti; his voice – robust, resonant, and immediately recognizable – launched him into the stratosphere of household recognition usually reserved for pop stars and Hollywood icons, and in the process spurred opera itself on to new peaks of mainstream popularity. Born in Modena, Italy, on October 12, 1935, as a boy he enjoyed local fame as a member of the town's soccer team, and first sang in the chorus with his father, himself a fine amateur tenor and devoted opera buff.

His songs tell stories, mostly romantic, but always honest. With “lo dico di no”, he says “no” to the seductions of life, well – mostly. The song “Meglio Stasera” by Henry Mancini, which he wrote for the film “Pink Panther”, is a tribute to the 60s. With Eros Ramazotti’s hit “Se bastasse una canzone” he jumps into the 90s. Paolos Conte’s “Via con me” should especially captivate the lovers of the Italian Cantautores, as dedicated and free as he performs this song. And with a wink he sings Fred Buscaglione’s “CheBambola”. He already sang the German version of the song together with Götz Alsmann on stage. Conversely, Costello translated the “Illusionen” of the great Udo Jürgens into Italian for “Non avessi te”.

This 3 CD set includes many of favourites of the period covered. The records are from 1944 to 1985 with both original recordings and re-recordings. Favourites include Chain Gang (Sam Cooke); What Do You Want? (Adam Faith) & How D’ Ya Like Your Eggs in the Morning (Dean Martin & Helen O’Connell). The sound quality is very good throughout.

The chamber cantata flourished in Italy as a counterpart to public opera and oratorio, cultivated by aristocratic patrons for their personal enjoyment. Perhaps because of its essentially private origins, this pervasive Baroque form remains relatively little known today. Between 2005 and 2009, Fabio Bonizzoni and his ensemble La Risonanza issued one of the most important CD series of the last decades. In seven volumes and featuring some of the brightest stars of the Baroque vocal galaxy – such as Roberta Invernizzi, Nuria Rial and Raffaela Milanesi –, Bonizzoni delivered milestone versions of all the chamber cantatas with instrumental accompaniment that George Frideric Handel composed during his stay in Italy (1706-1710).
