Jennifer Vyvyan was one of the most revered sopranos of her generation. Her career was particularly associated with Britten operas, for which she premiered many roles. But the scope of her talent was particularly wide, and she also excelled in early music and sacred works. Here she is featured in the rare Magnificat of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach conducted by Geraint Jones.

"How Words Mean" introduces a new approach to the role of words and other linguistic units in the construction of meaning. It does so by addressing the interaction between non-linguistic concepts and the meanings encoded in language. It develops an account of how words are understood when we produce and hear language in situated contexts of use. …

Cognitive Linguistics is the most rapidly expanding school in modern Linguistics. It aims to create a scientific approach to the study of language, incorporating the tools of philosophy, neuroscience and computer science. Cognitive approaches to language were initially based on philosophical thinking about the mind, but more recent work emphasizes the importance of convergent evidence from a broad empirical and methodological base.

Several Eloquence releases have celebrated the pellucid timbre and vivid characterisationof the British soprano Jennifer Vyvyan. 'A treasury to treasure' was the BBC Music Magazine's verdict on 'Songs of England' (4825045), a L'OiseauLyre recital from 1953. Four years later she took part in the first complete recording of Purcell's masque 'The Fairy Queen' (reissued as 4827449), where again her shapely phrasing and sharply etched tone-painting drew critical praise. As a founding member of the English Opera Group, Vyvyan had by then become a favouritesoprano for Benjamin Britten, who created a string of roles for her: 'Queen of Aldeburgh', she was called by her colleague, the baritone Thomas Hemsley.

The soprano Jennifer Vyvyan was taught at the Royal Academy of Music in London by Roy Henderson, coach of Kathleen Ferrier. With Henderson’s help she formed a secure technique, and quickly won acclaim for both operatic and oratorio roles in a wide variety of repertoire. Best known now as a singer favoured by Benjamin Britten, Vyvyan was also a leading figure in the revival of Baroque repertory: a celebrated interpreter of Purcell, Rameau, Bach and Handel who starred in landmark 1950s/60s reappraisals of the Handel operas at Sadlers Wells, Covent Garden and elsewhere.

This complete performance was a BBC studio recording, broadcast on 11 March 1956. The source recording is part of the 'Itter Broadcast Collection' held by Lyrita Recorded Edition Trust. For this BBC studio recording the assembled cast presents all that was best in British singing of the time. It also captures Joan Sutherland one of the greatest divas of any time at an interim point in her early career. She had sung her first major role (Amelia, Un ballo in maschera) at Covent Garden in 1952. She had taken part in Britten's Gloriana (1953) and created the role of Jennifer in Tippet's The Midsummer Marriage (1955), but the 'bel canto' roles that would define her career did not appear until 1959 when she sung Lucia di Lammermoor at the Royal Opera House.
