The first release on Black Jazz was by pianist and label producer Gene Russell; for the label's second release, Russell chose another piano man of impeccable taste, Walter Bishop, Jr. But while much of Russell's record consisted of songs composed by others, Bishop's record features all originals, most notably 'Soul Turn Around,' a groover that later turned up on Freddie Hubbard's 1969 LP A Soul Experiment.

Based out of New Orleans, guitarist and singer Walter "Wolfman" Washington has become one of the leading lights in the Louisiana blues scene, playing a fiery mixture of soul, funk, jazz, and blues. Washington first became a local hero backing up some of the Crescent City's most celebrated blues and R&B acts before moving on to a successful solo career, playing the blues with rare fluency and power.
In 1981, Washington cut his first solo album, Rainin' in My Life, for the small New Orleans label Help Me Records. Rounder Records, who had released several of Johnny Adams' albums with Washington, offered the guitarist a deal, and he released three albums for the respected roots music label, 1986's Wolf Tracks, 1988's Out of the Dark, and 1991's Wolf at the Door…

Lovingly compiled by seminal label Strut, this collection gathers the consummate production work of disco producer Walter Gibbons. 'Jungle Music' chronicles the years between 1976and 1986, covering Gibbons' intrinsic musical odyssey from the beginning to the end. An essential musical document, it highlights the journey from his early days when he pioneeredthe use of reel to reel re-edits (Double Exposure's 'Ten Percent' and Jakki's 'Sun Sun Sun'), to groundbreaking leftfield disco (the loose and adventurous remix of Dinosaur L's 'Go Bang') and cult electro and hip hop jams (Strafe and Harlequin Fours' 'Set It Off'). An often overlooked figure in thehistory of dance music, this astounding compilation finallygives the recognition that Walter Gibbons deserves.

Russell returned to the Top Forty in 1975 with “Lady Blue,” from Will O’ the Wisp. Subsequently, Russell explored his roots in country, recording a set of covers by Hank Williams and others (for which he used the pseudonym Hank Wilson) in 1976. His next album was 1978’s Americana, whose title nodded to the melting pot of homegrown influences that figured in Russell’s music (and presciently anticipated the roots-based Americana movement that would take hold in the Nineties).
