Maestro Marek Janowski leads a sensational cast — including star vocalists Lise Davidsen and Andreas Schager — on this new recording of Der Freischütz, the German Romantic opera par excellence. In the years after its 1821 premiere, the catchy melodies, picturesque charm and spooky scenes of Der Freischütz thrilled audiences throughout Europe. Janowski’s inspired reading lifts out the symphonic qualities of Carl Maria von Weber’s masterpiece, and makes clear why colleagues such as Hector Berlioz and Richard Wagner raved about the work.

There were additional stereo tests in December, again in the Manhattan Center, this time with Pierre Monteux conducting members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This cd is a passionate plea on behalf of this brilliant composer, whose virtuosity is never empty but always inspired, glowing with dramatic tension. particularly in slow movements there is a menacing depth to his tonal colours and atmospheres, whose originality and sheer joy in experimentation still fascinates us today. Weber knew and loved the clarinet like no other, excepting only Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. the works gathered together on this cd are all declarations of love to the clarinet. and so i join in, unisono, with berlioz’s enthusiastic cry from the heart:o Weber!!!

‘I think that every art is an art of authority, but between “authoritarian” and “dictatorial” there is a vast difference.’ So remarked the Hungarian conductor Antal Doráti towards the end of a long career which included, near its beginning, almost a decade spent working closely with orchestras in The Hague and Amsterdam. That work, very little known now, is revived on the present set which includes many recordings new to CD or in their first international release.
