By combining Parlato's coquettish, diaphanous singing style, Sutton's rootsy, organic acoustic approach and Jones' tuneful composing, Stevens charts a course all her own in a spirited new direction.

It’s very easy to come away from listening to a lot of technical metal feeling a little empty. Beneath the showmanship and undeniable talent, the genre is often guilty of failing to invoke any real feeling: when surgical precision takes centre stage a certain energy almost invariably paves the way. Animals as Leaders are no exceptions to this – where their 3 previous full-lengths have all in their own right been extremely impressive, stellar pieces of work, they are not without their shortcomings: a truly inventive and well-realised debut was somewhat clouded by muddy production and slightly blunted guitar tones, Weightless was at times cold, and is massively top-heavy in this reviewer’s opinion, and The Joy of Motion percussion was a little overpowered and detracted from a lot of the new-found warmth the tracks brought…

Equal parts Whiskeytown, the Low Anthem, and Jeff Buckley, the album is built on a foundation of melancholy, but never falls into complete despair. Steeped in the abyss of late-night introspection, Green has the voice to carry the weight of his protagonists, whether it's a sibling's descent into darkness ("O' Sister") or the glimmer of hope amongst the ruins of past relationships ("We Found Each Other in the Dark"), and the songs' lush yet deceptively simple arrangements allow his words the room to resonate.

Tell that to the Breathing Effect—a self-described electronic group influenced by soul, rock and jazz—whose debut album, Mars Is a Very Bad Place for Love, toes a line between traditional and turn up. As a unit, producer/keyboardist Eli Goss and drummer/bassist Harry Terrell merge the standards of conventional jazz with modern bounce beats. By definition, it scans as "jazz fusion," but the results conjure '70s R&B as well as the contemporary Los Angeles beat scene and hip-hop.
