The encounter of two geniuses is the background for this CD. In 1739 chamber lutenist Silvius Leopold Weiss visited Johann Sebastian Bach in Leipzig where they competed in friendly improvisation contests. Even though Bach probably played the harpsichord on this occasion, Johannes Pramsohler and Jadran Duncumb attempt a reconstruction of the encounter; besides the magnificent Suite in A Major, BWV 1025 – a joint work of both composers – the programme includes solo works for lute and the famous Partita in D Minor. Bach's private secretary wrote at the time: “Something extra special is happening here.”

For his début solo recording, Swedish lutenist Jonas Nordberg presents a delightful selection of works for Baroque lute and theorbo; the grandeur and elevated spirit of the French Baroque music of Dufaut and de Visée alternate with the refinement and extraordinary originality of the works of Silvius Leopold Weiss, who was regarded as the finest lutenist of his time. Jonas Nordberg, who has recorded three albums for BIS with recorder virtuoso Dan Laurin, gives personal and intense performances of these pieces, recorded in the gorgeous acoustic of the 13th Century Spanish church of San Francisco, in Ávila.

After the success of the complete works for lute by J. S. Bach, crowned by the recognition of international critics (Diapason d'Or, Choc de Classica, Excepcional Scherzo, Record Geijutsu, Eccezionale di Musica, Joker Absolu Crescendo), Evangelina offers a double album dedicated to the music of the greatest lutenist of all time: Sylvius Leopold Weiss. In his work, virtuosity and sumptuousness merge against the elegant and ethereal background of the gallant encounters and court dances of the 18th century. A new recording that restores the lute to its due and ancient glories.
