Run by brothers Hy Weiss and Sam Weiss, New York City's Old Town Records label and its subsidiary imprint Barry Records specialized in deep soul and R&B sounds during their run in the 1950s and '60s. While they were based on the East Coast, Old Town's best material was very much in the vein of Southern soul, and Heavy Soul: Old Town & Barry's Deep Down & Dirty Sides collects two dozen of the stronger recordings they released between 1962 and 1969. The Weiss brothers were not above lifting arrangement and production styles from other popular artists of the day, and "Sugar" by Bobby & Betty Lou sounds like a lost classic from Stax's glory days, while Lester Young (no relation to "Pres") is a dead ringer for Otis Redding on a couple of cuts, both in his performance and the work of his backing band. But what these tunes might sometimes lack in originality, they more than make up for in pure passion, and Bobby Long's driving "Heartbreak Avenue," the anguished "Nobody Knows" (Bobby Byrd recording undercover as "the Flambeaus"), John Standberry, Jr.'s slinky "Marie," and the wild and funky "Dirty Old Man" from Irene Reid are superb examples of '60s soul obscurities that deserve wider circulation. While a few cuts sound as if they were rescued from old vinyl pressings, for the most part the remastering on this set sounds quite good, and John Ridley's liner notes are informative and well researched. If you're looking for hits, they're in short supply on Heavy Soul: Old Town & Barry's Deep Down & Dirty Sides, but fans of classic soul will find plenty to savor here.~Heavy Soul: Old Town & Barry's Deep Down & Dirty Sides Review by Mark Deming

Second album by the Cologne drummer and composer in his quartet line-up with Tony Lakatos (tenor saxophone), Billy Test (piano) and Doug Weiss (bass) as a CD in a beautifully designed three-part digipack on JazzJazz. After »Choose Loose« (2022), »Mocambo Affair« is the second album that Dominik Raab has recorded together with Tony Lakatos, Billy Test and Doug Weiss. Like the quartet's debut, it consists exclusively of Raab's own compositions, with the nine new pieces sounding even more gripping and passionate. With dreamlike certainty, Lakatos, Test, Weiss and Raab complement each other to form a virtuoso team that lets Raab's visions shine. »Mocambo Affair« is a work of one piece and offers pure listening pleasure.

This is a superb and rare collection of The Maestro. The first 3 CD include his most treasured pieces cut straight through the heart with great brilliance and virtuosity. Among them, there are 24 selections never previously available on CD. But what makes this box set unique, is the 4th CD, entitled "The Guitar and I", a touching 40 minutes autobiography, written and narrated in English and Spanish by Segovia himself. A really thrilling experience to hear the great Maestro's voice describing all his life step by step. A 'must have' for any classical guitar lover. Enjoy.

Inspired by Julio Cortáza's sweeping and influential novel, Rayuela (Pantheon, 1963), pianist Laurent Coq and saxophonist Miguel Zenón transform parts of the Argentinean writer's famous work into a memorable jazz release. Written in Spanish, and published in 1963, the title literally means "Hopscotch." The text has been described as an "introspective stream-of-consciousness" and a "masterpiece of ingenuity and originality," with an astounding 155 chapters that can be read linearly, or without chronological order, leading to multiple thought-provoking conclusions.

Guitarist Miles Okazaki's Figurations is a fascinating document of how musical invention takes place on the spur of the moment. It is not a mad conglomeration of notes that come out in jagged clusters, but a mellifluous harmolodic excursion by four spectacular musicians as they begin to create music on each of their instruments, with their own ideas flowing organically, yet directed by the composer, Okazaki, who defines how the melody should sound by stating its antecedents and basic idea.

It's amazing what sounds good on a guitar. Arrangements belong here to the fixed repertoire, and when it comes to baroque music, this procedure is a common procedure anyway. Some examples of this have been recorded by the ARTIS guitar duo here. The repertoire ranges from George Frideric Handel to Johann Sebastian Bach. Of course, Antonio Vivaldi should not miss the lute composer Silvius Leopold Weiss and, as representative of the French Baroque, François Couperin.
