Used to be, in the world of stage musicals, there were hits and flops. Hits were shows that opened on Broadway and ran long enough to turn a profit; flops were everything else. But that was back in the days when there were a lot of Broadway shows, they didn't cost as much money to produce, and money was easier to raise. Today, things are much more complicated: Shows don't even have to open on Broadway to be successful. The greater risks and opportunities, however, tend to eliminate finality. In a sense, there are no flops anymore, only shows that haven't been sufficiently revised and reproduced enough times to become hits yet. Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the songs for Godspell and collaborated with Leonard Bernstein on Mass, returned to religious subject matter with the musical Children of Eden, which ran for only 103 performances in London in 1991, though it produced a cast album. Used to be, that would have meant it was a flop. Instead, Schwartz and librettist John Caird continued to work on the show.

Established in 1967 at the height of their powers, The Beatles’ Apple operation saw the group embrace and encourage a wealth of contemporary musical talent, offering studio time and demo facilities alongside recording and publishing contracts. This unique opportunity attracted artists and songwriters from across the musical spectrum, and GOOD AS GOLD presents a snapshot of that talent, spanning the years 1967 to 1975. From the psychedelic tinged sounds of the mid-late 1960s onwards, the label matured and evolved alongside its audience and remains as compelling today as it did during those halcyon days.

Back in September 1962, the only Beatles records in the shops saw them backing Tony Sheridan on a goosed-up version of My Bonnie, Their debut single Love Me Do would be released in October 1962 and the seismic change they brought to music worldwide would occur once the band achieved light speed in 1963. There was, however, before Beatlemania a thriving music culture that dropped anchor in a number of ports. Proto pop charts might be dominated by the likes of Cliff and his Shadows, crooners and sweet looking pop idols who brushed their teeth but R&B was gently finding its way into record racks either through imports or a growing number of home grown cover versions. The Motown sound was taking root in Detroit, America and already filtering into the UK on poor selling 7” singles on London and Fontana.

This is a mellotron lovers garden of eden! Lots of great keyboard work here and some incredible musicanship. Like so many great Italian recordings, "Ys" demands the listeners full attention throughout. Although this recording has a true '70's reproduced feel to it, it remains very enjoyable with its underground sound. The guitar work is superb and what really stands out is the use of vocals and harmonies throughout.

The Welsh psychedelic pop/rock legends Super Furry Animals return with 'Dark Days/Light Years', their ninth studio album. Where previous albums have seen the band experiment with extra instrumentation, this release is full of songs based on grooves rather than ensemble composition. The band's impish sense of humour remains, though, with track titles such as 'The Very Best Of Neil Diamond' and 'Moped Eyes' standing out. Also notable is Franz Ferdinand guitarist Nick McCarthy's guest appearance on the Kraftwerk-inspired 'Inaugural Trams', performing a German-language rap. In keeping with more recent albums, the band also share lead vocal duties between several members.
