Television composer Frank Duval scored several hits in Germany, including 1979's "Todesengel" and the following year's "Angel of Mine." Born in Berlin in 1940, he studied as an actor and dancer, but also sang with his sister, Maria. By the '60s, Duval was also composing music, both orchestral and pop, and his debut soundtrack for an episode of the German serial Tatort aired in 1977. Much busier with composition work during the late '70s, Duval also released some of his recordings through Teldec. From his 1979 debut Die Schönsten Melodien Aus Derrick und der Alte, "Todesengel" became a moderate hit.

Prince doubled down on risque rock & funk on 1981's Controversy. Pop hits eluded him this time around, but "Controversy" and "Let's Work" made the Billboard R&B chart, which wasn't the only time Prince visited these particular charts in 1981. He masterminded the eponymous debut album by the Time, a Minneapolis funk band featuring his old friend Morris Day. All this buzz led the Rolling Stones to hire Prince as an opener for part of their 1981 tour, running into audiences that were unwilling to embrace his genre-bending music. He'd soon find wider acceptance for his music with 1999.

In the late 70s British singer/songwriter Iain Matthews lived in the USA with career ups and downs. In 1978 he had a US Top 10 hit with the song "Shake It", just two years later he didn't even have a record deal. In 1977 already he had moved from Los Angeles to Seattle where he met David Surkamp, leader of the band Pavlov's Dog and singer with the probably most unique voice in the music business. Although both came from totally different musical directions ("I hated his music, he hated mine - that's why we knew it will work" - Iain Matthews), they formed the band HI-FI, a three guitar, bass and drums driven rock combo (Bruce Hazen, guitars: Garey Shelton, bass; Bob Briley, drums) which had almost nothing in common what Matthews had done in the 10 years before, and they shared all the vocal parts.

UK five CD set from the Liverpudlian trio led by brilliant singer/songwriter Ian McNabb. Scoring a UK chart hit with Love Is A Wonderful Colour from their debut album, The Icicle Works developed a loyal following with their anthemic Rock that set them apart from their Liverpudlian contemporaries Echo And The Bunneymen, The Teardrop Explodes and Wah!. Never confined to one style, main-man McNabb s impassioned guitar Rock, alongside the propulsive drumming of Chris Sharrock, was under-appreciated at the time but influenced many UK bands from the '90s.
