When a Dad Says "I Love You"

An R&B vocalist who puts her own contemporary spin on classic Southern soul, Ms. Jody has become a favorite in blues and soul circles for her often witty songs that speak the truth about life and love. Ms. Jody is the stage name of Joanne Vertie Delapaz, who was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 10, 1957. When Delapaz was two years old, her family moved to Bay Springs, Mississippi, where she still lives today. Her father was a minister, and she grew up on gospel music. Delapaz says she's been singing as far back as she can remember; growing up in the country, she would sing to the birds and animals as a child, and in 1975 she graduated to performing in her dad's church. Delapaz sang in church for over two decades, but after the death of her father and the end of her first marriage, she dropped out of music for a while.

After singer/guitarist Meric Long had spent a decade as one-half of indie rock duo the Dodos – time that saw the release of several acclaimed albums (including, most notably, 2008’s Visiter) and tours the world over – he was compelled to put his band on pause following the passing of his father and subsequent birth of his first child, choosing instead to prioritize life over music.

I grew up in a small suburb of NYC. My dad was a chemist and my mom stayed home. We lived modestly and I don’t recall wanting for anything. My favorite subject was science, but I did well in English, too. I played various sports, best at golf. I played trombone in band and orchestra. I loved Monty Pythonand the Yankees. My sister made me laugh.

The second album from Oxfordshire-based singer-songwriter Megan Henwood is going to cause problems for anyone who likes their new music to fit into neat little boxes. Henwood has worked on the album with her brother, Joe, with whom she won the BBC's Young Folk Award in 2009, but while Head, Heart, Hand taps in to various long-standing musical traditions, it's not a record you can simply label as "folk". The painstakingly crafted songs recall soul, blues and pop styles, while the careful and precise production is the result of the Henwoods' collaboration with producer Tom Excell, whose background is in electronic music.
