Oliver Knussen is one of British music’s great originals, and a rare example of a contemporary composer who has succeeded in writing music that is at once thoroughly modern but also shamelessly enjoyable. Knussen’s combination of artfulness and accessibility informs every aspect of his music. It is technically complex and often fiendishly challenging for performers, but also vivid and direct in its appeal. Joni Mitchell has had one of the most peculiar career arcs in the history of popular music. Since her first stint as a superstar in the making – from about 1967 to 1975 – her overall creative catalog of complex, challenging, ever-changing music has gone more or less unnoticed by the masses. Of course, this has been done by mutual agreement between artist and audience. Mitchell has no desire to pander (when she's slipped and tried, the results have been very mixed – 1985's poorly received Dog Eat Dog, for example) and the vast majority of the pop music buying public don't want to think when they listen to favored acts.

In 1976 Black and Blue Records brought to Europe Wild Bill Davis and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. The idea was to recreate the famous association done by Wild Bill and Johnny Hodges. A remarkable rhythm section consisting of Billy Butler and Oliver Jackson accompanied them. At the end of the tour several LPs were recorded in a studio but a concert organized in Châteauneuf-du-Pape by Hot Club of Orange was also taped. Here you will have a taste of this concert where our four associates are making a contest of swing and invention.
