New York City-based trumpeter and composer Matt Holman cut his teeth performing and recording with distinguished musicians such as Fred Hersch, John Hollenbeck, and Darcy James Argue before displaying his personal aesthetic of atmospheric chamber jazz with his debut album When Flooded in 2013. More recently, Holman found inspiration scouring the annals of history, extracting celebrated relics potent and stimulating enough to constitute the groundwork of his sophomore follow-up—2,500- year-old-plus relics to be precise.

I think that the corrrect name of this album is SOUL EYES and not sad eyes as indicated here. This recording is from 1991, but well on the same artistic level as later albums from Ponder. Here we have Ponders usual "brew" of Heavy Blues Swingers (Kansas City) Funk(All Blues)Standards(You are too beautiful) and Blues (You dont have to go) and that mix works. Ponder plays the simple riff on Kansas City single string.and he can "outline the groove" like noone else on tunes like this.Another highlight is "You are too beautiful" where Ponders solo will take any jazzguitar nut to "heaven".

Daniel Taylor is a Canadian countertenor, one of a group that has come on the scene in recent years and given promise that soon the countertenor voice will be considered less an exotic specialty and more a generally cultivated voice type. Taylor, perhaps more than other countertenors active today, sounds as though he is engaging in a natural kind of voice production rather than channeling his voice into circuitous channels. His sound is quite awesomely smooth, little touched by vibrato or strong passion, restrained, extremely elegant, and modest in dimension – perfect, in short, for the Dowland songs and mostly smaller Purcell airs that make up the bulk of this two-CD compilation, drawn from a pair of earlier releases.

John Frusciante kicked it into high gear in 2004, not only releasing Shadows Collide With People through Warner Bros., but also planning to release an album every other month or so through the rest of the year on the Recordcollection label. The first of these releases is Will to Death, a collaboration with Josh Klinghoffer (who also helped out with Shadows Collide With People). Those familiar with Frusciante's other solo work will know that this material will be far from Red Hot Chili Peppers lite: Frusciante definitely has his own (somewhat haunted) muse. The songs are basically nice little pop tunes, with hard-panned oddball production and very personal, introspective lyrics. This album also marks a new personal aesthetic for Frusciante: he wanted these songs to be raw and immediate (as inspired by some of his favorite albums), and to this end there were very few takes involved with any of these songs, and mistakes and elements of chance found their way in as well.
