"Bustin' Out of L Seven" is Rick James' 2nd studio album on Motown sub-label Gordy Records. Included on the album is the Top 10 R&B hit, "Bustin' Out (On Funk)". L7 is slang for "square", as in the opening lyrics of "Bustin' Out (On Funk)", "Well, alright, you squares, it's time you smoked, Fire up this funk and let's have a toke". The letter L and the number 7 form a square.

Back in 1978 when this set was recorded, fusion (the mixture of jazz improvisation with rock rhythms) was declining. Keyboardist Joe Sample, best-known for his work with the Crusaders, was in the process of being one of the founders of "contemporary jazz," an idiom that has since solidified into smooth jazz. Sample emphasized catchy melodies, light funk rhythms, appealing chord changes and a pop sensibility. For this accessible release, Sample is joined by the late legendary guitarist Billy Rogers, bassist Pops Popwell, his old Crusaders drummer Stix Hooper, a horn section and several guest guitarists. All eight tunes (which include "Fly with the Wings of Love" and "Islands in the Rain" ) are by the leader, who is heard throughout in melodic form, setting up a variety of light grooves that serve as superior background music.

The Emotions were one of the leading female vocal trios in the R&B and Disco world from the late 60 s into the early 80 s. Sisters Sheila, Wanda and Jeanette Hutchinson formed in their native Chicago in 1968 and found success with the Stax/Volt label under the guidance of legendary songwriters and producers Isaac Hayes and David Porter. After Stax went under The Emotions were reacquainted with Maurice White of Earth, Wind and Fire who wrote and produced their #1 R&B and Pop smash Best of My Love in 1977. "Come Into Our World" was the sister's 6th album to enter the R&B charts peaking at #35 R&B and #95 Pop in 1979. Produced by White, who also contributed his song writing skills to the project, it was an intriguing invitation just six months after "Boogie Wonderland".
