The laserpunk duo Rainbowlicker, consisting of Johan (ex-Beastmilk) and Peps (ex-Creepy Crawlie), has for quite some time aroused attention with their live performances, but until now the worrisome twosome hasn't been successfully persuaded to enter the studio.
Peps and Johan's music draws inspiration from the fury of punk rock and riot grrrl subculture and drowns them in electronic pulsating waves of sound. The eclectic electric group has been difficult to pin down, and their music has shaken the walls of art galleries as well as rat-infested Russian squats.
British pop and the BBC's flagship chart show said goodbye to the 70s and trembled on the edge of a new era for the show, for British music and for British society. This meant a continuing love for the nutty boys, Madness, who feature in this compilation with My Girl, and the man with the best cheekbones in pop, Adam Ant, gave us Antmusic. Top of the Pops from 1980 includes hits from Blondie, UB40, Diana Ross, Kool & The Gang, ABBA, Rainbow and many others.
Here is a great overview, in 58 individual tracks, of an important time in the life of one of the most important saxophonists in jazz. Lester Young (The Prez), was a genius of the music, spanning the shifting expression from the Swing years into Bebop, and becoming a pivotal figure in both. Yes, he was also persecuted and self-destructive, and plagued by mental and physical illness for most of his life, but his marvelous mind not only set the standard for generations of jazz saxophonists, but gave us an entire lexicon of hipster/beatnik language that has become part of American popular culture. Someone should make a movie about Lester Young.
