In 2014, from the ashes of the cult band Buttered Bacon Biscuits (BBB), were born the Witchwood. After the BBB split, some members of the band, Ricky, Andy, Steve and Sam, have decided, with the entry of new member Luca Celotti on bass, to start a new project, Witchwood. All musicians active for decades, with past recording experience and collaborations with artists like Martin Grice (Delirium) and Nik Turner (Hawkwind). Debut "Litanies from the woods" is the result of 2 years of composition, long and hard rehersal and recording sessions and is out for Jolly Roger Records in 2015. With the considerable lenght of 78 minutes the album features ten tracks and is a long journey from hard rock 70's, to progressive, psych, southern rock and blues and receives excellent reviews both from Italian and foreign press…
Witchwood were born in 2014 from the ashes of Buttered Bacon Biscuits. Debut album "Litanies From The Woods" (2015) is the result of 2 years of songwriting, long and hard rehearsals and recording sessions and features ten tracks (78 minutes) and it is a long journey from 70’s hard rock, to progressive, psych, southern rock and blues. Got very excellent acceptance from public and press, both in and outside Italy, which allowed a strong promotional-push. Rightly Witchwood were considered one of the best bands from the new "retro-rock" wave. One year later the acclaimed debut Witchwood came back with "Handful Of Stars" the right way to celebrate the appreciations received for the debut album, to introduce the new guitar player Antonino Stella, appreciated session man and long time Ricky's friend…
Essential: a masterpiece of progressive rock music.
A glimpse of heaven indeed
"From the Witchwood" marked the start of the Strawbs transition in earnest from a primarily acoustic folk based band, to a prog rock orientated band with strong folk influences.
This is an album of calm, serene, and playful music inspired by the nordic/scandinavian forests and mountains. Appearing on guitar is Ken Senior, who has often been complimented on his warm, melodic guitar style, and he fits perfectly into the melodic music on this album. Also some medieval inspired passages - pastoral, mystic and, well, just different. What really makes this album a joy to listen to, is the number of small "bridges", connecting the various songs. The music seamlessly flows into and out of the different parts, while it all appears to hang together. One theme is played in variuos incarnations, giving you the feeling that that it's all building up to a rousing finale.
In 2014, from the ashes of the cult band Buttered Bacon Biscuits (BBB), were born the Witchwood which released in 2010 "From the Solitary Woods", distribuited by "Black Widow Records" and positively reviewed by many italian and foreign music magazines and websites. To support that album BBB played in many gigs around Italy, also supporting important bands like Uriah Heep, Jethro Tull, Bud Spencer Blues Explosion, etc. They also released in 2013 “A National Acrobat” cover for the Black Sabbath tribute “Hands of Doom” for Mag Music Production. After the BBB split, some members of the band, Ricky, Andy, Steve and Sam, have decided, with the entry of new member Luca Celotti on bass, to start a new project, Witchwood…
Although little Sandy Denny material was released prior to her first album as part of Fairport Convention (1969's What We Did on Our Holidays), quite a few pre-Fairport recordings of the singer's survive, though they usually weren't made in the most technically sophisticated settings. This CD, recorded in the Glasgow home of folk singer Alex Campbell on August 5, 1967, was salvaged from a cassette and issued in 2011, when interest in Denny's work had escalated to a point where even documents of rather lo-fi quality held enough interest to merit a commercial release. This is clearly a recording for serious Denny fans because of those technical limitations; even some of the other home recordings from the time that have found both official and bootleg release boast superior sound.
The Buttered Bacon Biscuits are born as a side project of other different bands, around in 2008, by the meeting of musicians belonging to other bands from the surroundings of Faenza and Forlì, but after some months they become a new reality for all the members…
This album was originally the weak link in the transition of the Strawbs from an acoustic folk-rock outfit to a progressive folk band, being neither fish nor fowl and suffering from an anemic mix. The 1998 British reissue (A&M 540-939-2), however, solves some inherent problems that plagued both the original vinyl edition and the first CD reissues. The new remastering toughens up the bass sound, and brings out more of the sheer power of Rick Wakeman's organ and synthesizer playing, accenting the harder side of the group's sound that was obviously there in the studio but lacking in the analog mix.
