Packing some serious heavyweights onto one CD, the record features covers of Guthrie and Leadbelly tunes by, among others, Little Richard, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and U2. The 14 tracks consist of mostly well known tunes, and it's fascinating to hear what the artists have done to them. Particularly exciting is a supercharged version of Leadbelly's "Rock Island Line" by Little Richard with Fishbone and U2's take on Guthrie's "Jesus Christ." --Ian Landau

For fans of Woody Guthrie, Roll Columbia is a trove of new discoveries, and a celebration of his genius and lasting contributions to both the history and musical traditions of the Pacific Northwest. In 1941, the Bonneville Power Administration commissioned Guthrie to write 26 songs that would help promote to the public the construction of dams and hydroelectric power plants along the Columbia River. Seventy-five years later, present-day artists with ties to the Pacific Northwest who have been influenced by this fruitful time in Guthrie’s career have gathered together to record their own interpretations of the songs.

The 'Roll Columbia' project will celebrate the 75th anniversary of Woody Guthrie's incredibly creative month writing songs along the Columbia River back in 1941. We are recording first album to ever include all 26 songs that Guthrie turned in to the Bonneville Power Administration 75 years ago, with many of our region's finest musicians contributing tracks to the project. Though the songs are all about the Columbia River region, their quality and impact over the past decades made them uniquely significant to Guthrie himself and the struggle of the United States to escape the Great Depression. The musicians who've freshly interpreted these songs come from all around our country, and all now reside in the Pacific Northwest.

Arlo Davy Guthrie (born July 10, 1947) is an American folk singer-songwriter. He is known for singing songs of protest against social injustice, and storytelling while performing songs, following the tradition of his father Woody Guthrie. Guthrie's best-known work is his debut piece, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", a satirical talking blues song about 18 minutes in length that has since become a Thanksgiving anthem. His only top-40 hit was a cover of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans". His song "Massachusetts" was named the official folk song of the state in which he has lived most of his adult life. Guthrie has also made several acting appearances. He is the father of four children, who have also had careers as musicians. Arlo Guthrie's final two albums for Warner Brothers – Outlasting the Blues (1979) and Power of Love (1981) – were combined on a single compact disc by Koch in 2000.

The two volumes of Mermaid Avenue, released in 1998 and 2000 and named after the New York street where legendary folk artist Woody Guthrie lived in the 1940s, were collaborations between cult American alt-country/avant-garde rockers Wilco and revered British protest singer Billy Bragg, on which they set to music previously unreleased lyrics by Guthrie. This exhaustive four-disc set features both releases together with a whole new album of previously unreleased songs and the documentary Man in the Sand, which chronicles the project.
