One of the sweetest voices here in Colorado belongs to vocalist Rex Peoples. I first met Rex as part of African Wind when they performed at an acoustic festival the Phoenix Blues Society produced back in 2006, so Rex and I go way back. He and his amazing band, X Factr, just got back from Memphis, representing the Colorado Blues Society at the IBC, and they were able to record a killer record, Fried Food / Hard Liquor, in time for the big event. It’s smooth as silk so let’s give it a spin.

X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X is an opera with music by Anthony Davis and libretto by Thulani Davis, to a story by Christopher Davis. It is based on the life of the civil rights leader Malcolm X. The opera premiered in a full production at the American Music Theater Festival in Philadelphia, PA on October 9, 1985 and was subsequently revised and expanded for a production at the New York City Opera on September 28, 1986. The latter was listed as the world premiere in accordance with an agreement made between then-NYCO artistic director Beverly Sills, and AMTF directors Eric Salzman and Marjorie Samoff. The Oakland Opera Theater performed the work in June 2006. New York City Opera presented an abridged concert version on May 12, 2010 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Rhythm X Revival is an energetic new Australian rockin' country blues band formed by John-Luke Shelley and Johnny Tesoriero. The two musicians have collaborated and each written songs for their soon to be released debut album which they have just recorded at The Teskey Brothers' studio (engineered by Sam Teskey). Featuring John-Luke as the lead singer and on lead and rhythm guitar, Chris Win on bass, Jeremy Neumann on the keyboard and Johnny Tesoriero on drums, Rhythm X Revival has a unique and melodic musical style that incorporates the vocal harmonies of Johnny, Chris and Jeremy. The band was runner-up at the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society’s Blues Performer of the Year in 2016 as JLS & Co (now renamed Rhythm X Revival); runner up in 2013 as The 3 Tones, in 2012 as High Speed Steel, and John-Luke was runner up as a singer and acoustic / electric guitarist.

If you’re an old school heavy metal fan and the name Lethal X rings familiar, then it has served its purpose. Lethal X consists of two original members of Racer X with vocalist Jeff Martin (Badlands, Surgical Steel, Michael Schenker Group) and drummer Harry Gschosser. The band lineup is rounded out with bassist Mike Szuter and guitarist Milan Polak. Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) and Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big, Sons Of Apollo, Talas) both guest on the album.
Lethal X’s debut album “90 Tons of Thunder” carries a healthy dose of nostalgia, as is also evident by the presence of the “Street Lethal” cover in the rear view mirror of the speeding vehicle in the “90 tons” cover art.
However, this nostalgia doesn’t translate in the band trying to sound retro. Old school heavy metal is what you get, but it is approached with fresh energy and modern production…
