X Men

is the name of three comic book series published by Marvel Comics based on the mutant superhero group The X-Men. The first series, published in 2001, used time travel as a plot device to explore the themes and history of the X-Men, and to resolve some several dangling plotlines. The second series, began in 2009, bears no relation to the 2001 series and is basically intended by its writer, veteran X-Men author Chris Claremont, as a continuation of his storylines for and that were never enacted after his resignation from the title following X-Men #3. Set in an alternate continuity of the Marvel Universe, it ran bi-weekly as a regular title for 24 issues with the final issue released on May 19, 2010. In June 9, 2010, Marvel, with Chris Claremont and Tom Grummett on board, relaunched the 2009 series also as a biweekly with a new team and a new storyline, starting again with issue #1. It features the adventures of the eponymous group of mutant superheroes as official canon. While hugely successful now, it took a number of years since the X-Men's first issue (cover dated September 1963) to become even a mild success. The series had been out of production since 1970 until interest was rekindled with 1975's Giant-Size X-Men and the debut of a new, international team. Under the guidance of writer Chris Claremont (whose 16-year stint began with August 1975's Uncanny X-Men #94), the series grew in popularity worldwide, eventually spawning a franchise with numerous spin-off "X-Books", including New Mutants, X-Factor, Excalibur, Wolverine, X-Force, Generation X, the simply titled X-Men, and a number of prefixed titles such as Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men. Not to be confused with the popular series, nor last year's five- issue miniseries, is its own series that deals with the story of one classic X-Man per issue. Each issue is standalone (one-shot) and centers on the super hero's first manifestations of his or her mutant superhuman abilities and the emotions that follow the development. With heavily plot-oriented or partially-explained origins for many X-Men characters, sometimes the unique, emotional aspects of a character's intro gets lost amongst the story's twists and turns and X-Men Origins aims to remedy this. The stories are heavily character oriented, focusing on the emotions and trauma involved in a young teen facing the consequences of developing mutant powers in a mutant-hating world, yet stay as close as possible to the characters' official histories, with surprisingly little "ret-con (retroactive continuity)."
