The surprisingly cohesive soundtrack to the 2015 Jaco Pastorius documentary Jaco features tracks the legendary jazz bassist recorded during his short career in the '70s and '80s. The first major documentary film about Pastorius, who was born in 1951 and died tragically in 1987 at age 35, Jaco was produced by bassist Robert Trujillo (Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica) and Pastorius' oldest son, Johnny Pastorius. Jaco details Pastorius' rise from unknown Florida musician to internationally recognized and innovative jazz superstar.

Few observers expected that Whitney Houston's first big-screen role in 1992's The Bodyguard would generate a phenomenon. Not that the film itself was a phenomenon – it was a healthy success, due not only to Houston, but to her co-star Kevin Costner's drawing power – but the soundtrack's success was astonishing. The Bodyguard followed Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" to the top of the charts, and once they got there, neither the single nor the album budged for weeks. "I Will Always Love You" spent a record-shattering 14 weeks in the top slot, while The Bodyguard spent 20 weeks at number one, eventually selling over 15 million copies and winning the Grammy award for Album of the Year.

The soundtrack from the acclaimed 2011 Pedro Almodóvar film features instrumental music by internationally renowned film composer – and longtime Almodóvar collaborator – Alberto Iglesias, inspired by Bernard Herrmann's classic scores for Alfred Hitchcock's thrillers. Besides Iglesias' compositions, La Piel Que Habito includes four other selections: "Por el Amor de Amar" (the film's main song) and "Se Me Hizo Fácil," both sung by the exquisite flamenco fusion vocalist Concha Buika; a cover of Elliott Smith's "Between the Bars" by Chris Garneau; and "Shades of Marble" by Danish electronic artist Trentemøller.

At the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, an animated feature film caused a sensation and won the Special Jury Prize: La Planète sauvage by René Laloux, with phantasmagorical drawings by Roland Topor. For this philosophical tale of anticipation, where men serve as domestic toys for blue giants, the Draags, the immense composer Alain Goraguer unleashes his inspiration with a haunting main theme, of great melodic obviousness, soaring and hypnotic climates , but also pursuits with a rhythm with very funk accents, wah wah guitar in support, as if Goraguer was reaching out to Isaac Hayes of Shaft.

At the time of its release, this was the watershed for soundtracks, selling a kazillion copies. It documents Whitney Houston's character in the Kevin Costner movie, which required Houston to play only herself (although one hopes she wouldn't end up with someone as smarmy as Costner). The album is as much a testament to the production of Babyface who, through the mid-1990s, actually was the mainstream of contemporary hit music. Houston's singing is much better than her acting, and almost every song enjoyed a long tenure at the top of all the charts. Along with "I Will Always Love You" and five other Houston songs, the soundtrack also features Lisa Stansfield, Kenny G with Aaron Neville, and Joe Cocker with Sass Jordan.
