Trying to shake things up, producer Creed Taylor brought in arranger Marty Sheller from Mongo Santamaria's Afro-Cuban band, reduced the sizes of the servings (no track is longer than 3:50), cranked up the decibels to a raucous level, and presented Benson in what he hoped would be a radio-friendly setting. The wonder is that Benson manages to transcend the blasting Latin-percussion-spiced production, the tight time limits, and all with often brilliantly tasty guitar fills and brief solos in many styles and three reverb-heavy vocals.

Harlem-born artist, author and activist Faith Ringgold painted some of the most truthful and empowering representations of African Americans during the civil rights and women’s movements of the 1960s and 1970s. At the time, the art establishment dismissed her seminal American People series as political art by a woman, and a black woman at that. Undeterred, Ringgold continued to tell her story using numerous art forms, including traditional quilts which have their roots in the slave culture of the South. Ringgold reinterpreted their function to tell politically charged stories, something she has also done with her illustrated children’s books.

As a package, the three albums contained on these two CDs offer a well-rounded picture of the Drells at the time of their Gamble & Huff days at Philly International. For starters, these records were all aimed at disco, being recorded in 1976, 1977, and 1979, respectively. It is true that most of this material doesn't match the brilliant work they did at Atlantic, but then, it's hard to dismiss any of these records out of hand. Given the pure, big string and popping bassline treatment that was so prevalent at Philly, it's easy to see why these records charted. Using the production team of McFadden, Whitehead, and Carstarphen, all three albums were aimed squarely at the charts and they all did.

This nutty album features hits of the 1960s performed in the style of 1930s singers like Rudy Vallee. It is credited to "The Templeton Twins" but is actually performed by Ted Templeman with his voice double tracked. It should be noted that while almost all of the album features cover versions of then recent hits, there is one original novelty song called "Ooh, Ooh Guru". Also, "Our Way" is actually "My Way" (get it?). This is a fun album if you like twisted versions of familiar songs.
