One of the greatest sessions ever recorded by Ronnie Mathews – an excellent soul jazz pianist who's working here in a mode that's similar to that of Kenny Barron, Cedar Walton, or other 70s lyrical giants! Mathews' touch on the keys is incredible – at one moment extremely sensitive and pensive, at another racing forward with a searing searching spirituality that's driven on by the bass of Yoshio Suzuki and the drums of Louis Hayes – a great rhythm duo who really help give the record a very special, unique feel. The album features the original compositions "Ichiban", "K's Waltz", and "Jean-Marie" – plus a great version of "Manha Do Carnaval", which features Mathews on Fender Rhodes!
Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. A really beautiful chapter in the career of reedman Sadao Watanabe – a batch of mostly original compositions, as you might guess from the title – and a double-length record that really showed an evolution of his talents! The sound is often highly lyrical – with Watanabe blowing alto, soprano sax, and flute in modes that are clearly informed by his bossa nova recordings of the late 60s, but which also spring forth in even more complicated styles – with echoes of French soundtracks, European jazz, and other sweet styles of the time. The group's a small one – with Yoshiaki Masuo on guitar, Kazuo Yashiro on acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, Masabumi Kikuchi on piano, Yoshio Suzuki on bass, and Fumio Watanabe on drums.
Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. Comes with liner notes. One of the more obscure albums by this great reedman – recorded live, and with a loose feel that really points towards his changes to come in the 70s! The album's got a lively vibe that's quite a change from some of Watanabe's albums from a few years before – longer tracks, lots of new ideas, and a style that's really stretching out – yet never too far outside too.
Reissue with SHM-CD format and new 24bit remastering. Comes with a mini-description. Killer work from this overlooked Art Blakey stretch of the mid 70s – a time when the drummer was getting back to basics, and re-igniting his music with help from some key younger players! This set sparkles with sharp tenor from the great David Schnitter – already a powerhouse out of the box, and driven onto new heights by Blakey! Also present is pianist Albert Dailey, whose conception helps bring in some fresh sounds to the Jazz Messengers universe – alongside flute player Ladji Camara, who also vocalizes on one cut. Yoshio Suzuki handles bass, and old line trumpeter Bill Hardman comes in to round out the group – on titles that include "Uranus", "Third World Blues", "Namfulay", and "Backgammon".
Manhattan Focus is the first and only one album of the group, featuring Al Foster (drums) Yoshiaki Masuo (electric guitar, acoustic guitar) Bob Berg (tenor sax) Kunihiko Sugano(acoustic piano, electric piano) Tom Harrell (flugelhorn) Yoshio Suzuki (acoustic bass) T.M. Stevens (electric bass) Sammy Figueroa (percussion) Eddie Colon (percussion).
