He has been chosen Best Jazzman 24 times in a row by Swing Journal's annual poll. In 1979, he joined a group of innovative musicians such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Akiko Yano, Yukihiro Takahashi, Yasuaki Shimizu, Toshiyuki Honda and Shuichi 'Ponta' Murakami to form the legendary all-star band KYLYN, making an impact on the Japanese music scene. In autumn of the same year, he participated in the world tour of Yellow Magic Orchestra. Its huge success brought the name KAZUMI an international recognition.
Throughout the 1980s, he worked with a stellar cast of established musicians, including Tony Levin, Bill Bruford, Sly and Robbie, Wayne Shorter, Patrick Moraz, Marcus Miller, Richard Bona and Peter Erskine.
Watanabe has remained prolific and active throughout the 1990s and 2000s and remains one of Japan's best-selling jazz artists. His output is considered some of the better instrumental jazz fusion to emerge from Japan, informed with a particular bite and variety in approaches.
He is known for heavy endorsement and use of guitars by Steinberger and Paul Reed Smith.

Concocting a freshly strange blend of synth pop and damaged folk music, Grapetooth is a band from Chicago that consists of Chris Bailoni and Clay Frankel. The two don’t remember clearly how they met, but Frankel, home from tour with garage rock outfit Twin Peaks, began dropping in at Bailoni’s residence in the winter of 2015. The two began writing spontaneous songs in Bailoni's synth laden bedroom studio, which had long stood as the base of operations for his own wonderfully weird solo and producer work as Home-Sick.

Once, computer game music was a cute joke. In 1984, it became art. The Commodore 64 home computer was the first to contain a full analog synthesizer. A new generation of composers started their musical careers, and computer music was changed forever. "Back In Time" is dedicated to Commodore heroes past and present: Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Ben Daglish, Fred Gray, Tim Follin, Jeroen Tel, David Whittaker, Jonathan Dunn, Charles Deenen, Chris Huelsberg, Bogg, Ratt, Jackal… they made C64 more than a computer: they made it an experience. These CDs are for those who support the rebirth of a computer that surpassed the relatively lowly level of its technology: the rebirth of a computer that never died.

This is YMO's 6th album, released in May 1983 and undoubtedly one of the best synthesizer pop albums ever. 'Naughty Boys' has a different sound and leans more to the Japanese pop music scene than previous albums. Nevertheless, this is a solid dance album! 'Kimi Ni Mune Kyun' and 'Lotus Love' stand out as most famous and loved by fans. 'Instrumentals' was released in July 1983 and is the instrumental version of 'Naughty Boys' featuring additional synths, a completely different running order and include different versions and mixes.
