The Dutch are way too hard on themselves. So far, Chandos has released three discs (including this one) in its ongoing Dutch composers series featuring the Residentie Orchestra of The Hague, and all three have been excellent. And yet, the writer of the booklet notes treats this music as if listening to it were some kind of penance. He should take a lesson from his English colleagues, who indiscriminately promote any piece of native trash as God’s gift to the world of music. Well, maybe he needn’t go quite that far.

This disc presents a survey of music by Finnish composer Toivo Kuula, a pupil of Sibelius. Best-known for his songs and choral music, Kuula s arresting orchestral music draws heavily on folk influences and constitutes some of the most striking Finnish music of its time. Renowned soprano Susan Gritton and the BBC Concert Orchestra under the inspired baton of Martyn Brabbins give spellbinding accounts of this gloriously colorful repertoire.

This reworking of Das Schloss Dürande aims to restore to the international operatic stage a significant opera of late-tonal Modernism that in the long term will have to find its own way into the repertoire alongside the works of Richard Strauss, Leoš Janáček, Franz Schreker and Alexander Zemlinsky.

In 2005, Adrian Oetiker (piano), Christoph Streuli (violin) and David Riniker (cello) formed the Feininger Trio. They named it after painter, designer and Bauhaus co-founder Lyonel Feininger (1871-1956), whose former atelier in the Berlin district of Zehlendorf was located in the vicinity of the room where the musicians now rehearse. Having known one another since their studies, the three musicians had gathered experience in the meantime as chamber musicians in other formations. All three of them wanted to apply that experience to an intense, prolonged study of the piano trio, a genre which possesses a rich, wide-ranging repertoire. They started by mastering the Classical and Romantic core repertoire, particularly the piano trios of Brahms and Dvoˇrák. At the same time they pursued a particular interest in Modernism (Ives, Zemlinsky, Korngold). The current release featuring Czech piano trio masterpieces is dedicated to the memory of the great violinist Josef Suk (1929-2011).

Closing the distance between classical music and Broadway, between the old world and the new, this album is born out of a stunning encounter between two performers. Kate Lindsey is an opera star whose career is skyrocketing. She has stunned audiences with her performances of Mozart and Purcell. Baptiste Trotignon is a multi award-winning jazz pianist who plays with big names like Brad Mehldau or Tom Harrell, but who has a long-held interest in classical music, even composing a piano concerto for Nicholas Angelich. Together, they have produced a rich and varied programme around the songs of Kurt Weill, from Nanna’s Lied to Trouble Man, and classics from The Threepenny Opera and Lost in the Stars.

With the exotic prelude by Pavel Haas, the door opens upon a strange and unfamiliar world of sound as the Acelga Quintet leads us on an exciting musical journey in the ensemble’s new GENUIN release. The five prizewinning musicians bring together works that are connected to Bohemia in the broadest sense: ranging from the late Romantic sonorities of Josef Bohuslav Foerster to Alexander Zemlinsky’s featherlight Rondo, Leoš Janáček’s tale of youth, and the humorous and offbeat musical mini-dramas by the above-mentioned Pavel Haas. The result is wind playing and chamber music at the very highest level: with their instrumental virtuosity and ensemble synergy, a truly superlative production!

Soprano Sandrine Piau writes in the program notes that there is no narrative or theme unifying the songs on this album, only the quality they share of being evocative of something beyond themselves. The late Romantic songs are indeed understated and suggestive rather than emphatic, many written in elegiac moods of hushed happiness or subdued yearning. The centerpiece is Richard Strauss' four song cycle, Madchenblumen, written when the composer was 26, which provided Piau with the initial inspiration for this collection. It's immensely appealing, and its generous lyricism makes it a work that deserves to be widely sung and known.

Music by Schönberg and Zemlinsky, written for the legendary Überbrettl cabaret in Berlin, is combined with contemporary music by Sven Daigger, two of which were written specifically for this recording. Lackner and Lichtwark approach the art songs straddling all genres with seriousness and extraordinary lightness. Listeners can expect sharp character sketches ranging from passionate love to honky-tonk and the dark abysses of the soul.
