Director Martin Campbell, well-known to the action arena after 1995's GoldenEye, teams up with executive producer Steven Spielberg to bring the first Hollywood production of creator Johnston McCulley's Zorro in over four decades to the big screen. With scenic 18th century Mexico as a backdrop, Anthony Hopkins plays the original Zorro, a.k.a. Don Diego de la Vega, intent on revenge after rival enemy Don Raphael Montero (Stuart Wilson) murdered his wife and took his daughter, Elena. After being imprisoned for 20 years, the fabled hero removes his mask and takes on a tarnished young apprentice, Alejandro Murieta (Antonio Banderas), to infiltrate Montero's plan to take control of California from Santa Anna.

Zorro Comics from Topps Comics

“Zorro, Spanish for fox, is the secret identity of Don Diego de la Vega (originally Don Diego Vega), a fictional nobleman and master swordsman living in Spanish-era California. He defends the Californio people from the corrupt tyranny of the Spanish governor, proving himself to be much too foxlike and cunning for the bumbling authorities to catch. He was created by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, and first made his appearance in The Curse of Capistrano, serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Weekly in 1919. The character's visual motif is typically a black costume with a cape, a small flat-brimmed hat (he wears a wide sombrero in the original) and a black cowl mask that covers the top of the head from eye level up (the mask covered his whole face in the original). In addition, his favored weapon is a rapier which he often uses to leave his distinctive emblem, a large 'Z' made from three quick scratches. He also uses a bullwhip, like the later Indiana Jones. In the original story, he also uses a pistol”.

is a character based on a real person or persons created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley. He has been featured in several books, films, television series, and other media, including comic books. The character's visual motif is typically a black costume with a flowing Spanish cape, a black gaucho hat or Cordobés, and a black cowl mask that covers the top of the head from eye level upwards. This was mainly due to the smash 1920 Douglas Fairbanks movie , itself based on McCulley's character. With the character's visual background thus established, Zorro has appeared in many different comic book series over the decades, first in Dell Comics in 1949. The latest iteration is now published by Dynamite Entertainment, began last February 20, 2008 with writer-illustrator Matt Wagner and artist Francesco Francavilla as the creative team.
