The twenty pieces comprising the musical collection in the Codex Trujillo del Perú are an exceptional case in the history of the indigenous music of the New World. This collection of tonadas, cachuas, tonadillas, bayles, cachuytas and lanchas offers a glimpse of the repertory native to the traditions of the country, as indicated by the text of one of the cachuas sung “al uso de nuestra tierra” (“according to the customs of our land”) and in particular the songs and dances favoured by the popular classes who lived in the “Viceroyalty of Peru” at the end of the 18th century.

Irakere (faux-Yoruba for 'forest') is a Cuban band founded by pianist Chucho Valdés (son of Bebo Valdés) in 1973. They won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1980 with their album Irakere. Irakere was a seminal musical laboratory, where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created. The group used a wide array of percussion instruments like batá, abakuá and arará drums, chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongó, tumbadoras (congas), and güiro.

Boogaloo / Latin / New York Salsa

Pete Rodriguez was part of a wave of Nuyoricans who came of age in the early '60s twilight of the mambo era. The boogaloo sound was just starting to bubble up in El Barrio (East Harlem) amongst this generation of Nuyorican bandleaders, and Rodriguez's group was on the very front line, alongside the Joe Cuba Sextet and Ricardo 'Richie' Ray. Pete had one of the great boogaloo bands of all time; he truly generated high-calibre energy on the dance floor.
